Brendan Shanahan anyone?

Brendan Shanahan has had enough with the New York Rangers.  The 39 year old will be open to the free agent market.  Now the question is, if you could, would you take him on the Bruins?

I would, which I know is against what you probably think.  But, think about it this way.  The Bruins have a 7 forwards under the age of 23.  That is young.  Shanahan would provide instant leadership and could help make the kids like Kessel, Wheeler and others develop into better players.  The 11th all time goal scorer could not hurt this team.

Now, making room for him is another issue entirely.  As we all know, the entire roster will not stay healthy all season, Kobasew has already been out, Axelsson is injured every season, and anything can happen.  And, we could use some more help scoring.  Shanahan would provide more depth and help the PP out.  He had 11 PP goals last season.  A guy like Stephane Yelle could be placed on waivers to make room, or Blake Wheeler could be sent down to Providence to work more on his game.

Price is another thing.  If Shanahan wants 3-4 million, then no thank you. But if the price is 1-2.5 million, you take a look.

I don't know, but Shanahan looks a lot nicer up there than Axelsson.

I'm not sure how they'd clear enough cap space even if he took less money. I'd definitely love to have him on that first line with Savard and Ryder though.

i miss dave lewis behind the bench. I also miss glen murray on the ice for 22 minutes a game with that stick waiting for the perfect pass, which somehow resulted in 28 goals. I miss wayne primeau and mark mowers playing on the second line and receiving 18 minutes a game plus powerplay time. I miss paul mara doing his best hal gill impression back on defense. I miss how brandon bochenski and petr tenkrat were once our first line wingers. I miss how everyone thought stan chistov was the next coming of sergei samsonov(well his years in boston). I miss when jason york would let my grandmother skate by him. I miss when shean donovan would just skate up and down the ice and do absolutely nothing.I miss andrew alberts going his best paul mara impression. I miss jeff hoggan playing on the third line. I miss it when every time the bruins got the pucked they simply just dumped it into the offensive zone. oh how i miss thee dave lewis.

i dont kno if alot of you noticed this or not, but after this year we lose alot of dead weight. axelsson, yelle, and fernandez are all going to be UFA's at the conclusion of the season. how awesome is that? frees up 6,933,000 million for next season. all three guys are easily replaceable (rask, sobotka, another UFA). maybe a play for a big time scorer or a true first line LW??

The Dave Lewis post was hilarious.

But seriously Shanahan does not solve any of the Bruins issues. The team needs to play more discipline resulting in less penalties, needs a better PK, and better overall "D" with better transition from D to O.

I think a vet just takes away form our youth's development (Nokie, Sobotka, Wheels, etc...)

interestin stats for mook,

lucic played on the fourth line until around game 50 and received no playing time on the PP until then, where as axelsson played on the first line(with someone named marc savard?? whos he? he totaled 137 assists in his first two years with the bruins) and the powerplay all season. milan totaled 12:09 of ice time last season where as PJ totaled 17:35. Axelsson was 32 with 10 seasons of pro experience under his belt. Milan Lucic was 19 and a rookie in his very first NHL season. Wow your right it just makes me think of how much Axelsson really does suck .

Just like the other dude said its about minutes played and who your playing with thats it thats all. Tell me this MOOK when is the last time PJ energized this team with an on ice play or hit or even got in to a fight for that matter...... Fallse Ontario

just proving my point.

this game isn't just about offense and scoring goals.

and for the record, players on the bench don't get throbbing hard-ons (like you at home) after watching fights...a successful penatly kill is MUCH more energizing. i bet you're one of those people who wish the nets were bigger to see more goals! yee-haw!

and don't think i'm milan-hating or anything...just wanted to compare apples to oranges ;)

4:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

still, comparing pj to lucic is dumb. but i like pj he serves a purpose on the team, just not on the first line. am i the only one who is confused about the yelle pick up, hes the same player as pj, but pj is better. and btw plus minus does not count on pp or pk. and pj dropped the gloves in a huge spot against montreal last year. surprised nobody remembered that. no shanahan please, keep team as is or try to get a quality d-man. one change i would make though is drop yelle bring back reich. i like watching him play he is a scrapper, we need some more of that.

I think Mook was comparing Lucic to PJ, in light of the fact that Lucic's popularity outshines that of PJ, where PJ is an effective and important player to this roster.

Why dont you all consider the fact that...PC, Cam Neely, Julien and everyone else who actually makes the calls appreciates PJ, and does not take him or his contributions for granted. Nor do they look for greener grass on the other side of the fence, as some of my fellow Boston sports pundits have a nasty habit of doing.

5:10 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

no he was comparing their numbers, trying to say that axelsson brings more offensively than lucic does. if my grandmother skated on a line with savard for the whole season, she could score 29 points too, but probably more.

we all think pj is a decent, regressing player. 4th line duty and ice time should be all he receives. when it is more than that it is frustrating, especially last night when pj was the extra attacker with a minute left in the game? r u serious julien?

as for being appreciated by julien, that is not sayin much, look at yelle hes appreciated very much by julien. as was glen metropolit, no offense to him but hes a 4th liner not a 2nd liner. julien loves his veterans, a la dave lewis, and does not want to lose them by cutting minutes.

axelsson is more appreciated by the media. dupont loves him. jack edwards wants to have his babies. the same jack edwards that was in love with wayne primeau. he mentioned how GREAT of a player primeau was for the bruins and how any team would want him. HAHAHAH seriously jack.

9:37 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

mook's point is well made. Although Lucic will have better numbers this season, being his second and playing with the likes of Marc Savard, PJ is still a PK master and will have a high +- because of his defensive abilities. If one of the requirements of the Selkie award wasn't to score 30+ goals in a season PJ Axelsson would be a finalist every season. As far as "thanks PJ" for our "bad" PK numbers last season, PJ was hurt for a significant portion of the season. Think back to the 2006 olympics who was the Swede's top PK Unit? Samuel Pahlsson and PJ Axelsson, with 2 D men. I'm sure Team Sweden didn't add Axelsson to score goals, and I believe Mr. Axelsson has a nice shiny gold medal to prove his contribution. PJ is a vital part of this Bruins squad and I hope to see him healthy and killing penalties with Stephan Yelle all season long.

9:38 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was at the Oilers game and PJ wasn't all bad...but his main role on the team is PK and we gave up 2 PP goals again last night against the Flames and he was a -1. Yes PJ was one of the best PK'ers in the game when he had Rolston but thats his main role. Is anyone else frustrated with the damn passive box PK they play...put some pressure on the puck carrier.

Listening to you guys talk about PJ like hes some kind of defensive god is making me sick. 4 times last night he couldn't get the puck out of our end witch lead to a Calgary scoring chance. He doesnt put any pressure on the guys with the puck on the PK he sits back and lets them set up. How can you guys not see that. They even centered him out last night on one the back checks that lead to the 3rd goal when he didnt cover for his defencemen. Scott NY
