Breaking Down the Deals

Petteri Nokelainen to the Anaheim Ducks for Steve Montador.

Great deal by the Bruins.  No it wasn't Pronger, Morris or Kaberle, but Montador is a tough customer.  He leads the Anaheim Ducks in PIM with 125, and he is a +14 on a defensively struggled Ducks team.  Montador has 4 goals and 16 assists for 20 points, making him the 3rd highest scoring Bruins defenseman behind Chara and Wideman.  Montador can play some wing as well and is a definite upgrade over Shane Hnidy and Matt Hunwick.

Nokie was a decent checking line/4th line player, but his offense was going nowhere and he did not have a spot on the roster.  We also save 850k off the cap next season.  Montador makes 900k this season.

Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums to Tampa Bay for Mark Recchi and a 2010 2nd round pick.

Recchi is the left-handed shot PC has been searching for since Sturm went down.  Recchi is having a solid season in Tampa Bay, even though he is 41.  He has 32 assists and 13 goals for 45 points.  Now, I know some people have issues with Lashoff going, but honestly he was the 22nd overall pick, and he wasn't showing much.  Hunwick is better than him and he did not have a spot on the team, not to mention his contract was up.  Karsums is nothing more than a 3rd line winger who did not have a spot on the team.  Karums for Recchi and Lashoff for a 2nd rounder that could be anywhere from 32-40.

By trading all three, PC saved 2.5 million off next year's cap total. That gives him plenty of room with Axelsson, Hnidy and Fernandez off the books to re-sign Kessel, Krejci and Thomas.

Tampa just sent Eminger to the Panthers for Welch and a 3rd round pick.

Ducks send old friend Pahlsson to the Blackhawks, but it doesn't say for what.

i like the moves, but i will hate to see axe on the fourth line. if thats where he ends up, it will be a weak point in our lineup. they should just scratch axe. that is a soft fourth line that wont add energy to the team. at least bitz is big and looks threatening, even though he does not play that way.

but i do love the move by chia.

The Kings send O'Sullivan to the Hurricanes (not sure for who). Then the Hurricanes flip O'Sullivan to Edmonton. (For Cole?)

Recchi is a natural RW with a left shot. Thoughts on him lining up on the LW?

Williams goes to the Kings for O'Sullivan,

I think with Recchi's experience, he could play either wing. I think the biggest upside is his veteran leadership and gritty playing style. Someone in a past post wondered about swapping Kessel for RW to LW. Why not try it with either Kessel.... or Kobasew. Makes for interesting lines.

TSN just reported... cole to the Hurricanes for O'Sullivan.

Looks like Boston is most likely done if Cole was the last thread hanging.

Great job by PC to add some really great roll players to a team that couldn't afford to lose it's core. He definitly got a great, physical guy in Montador, and Recchi is one of the best guys in the NHL and he still performs at a high level. I give PC a B+ (up from a B- earlier ;)
