Bruins after Jay-Bo?

According to...yes, Eklund, the Bruins may be offering the best package for Jay Bouwmeester, the young stud defenseman from Florida.

Now, before any Panthers fans goes, Lucic, Kessel and Rask on us, let's examen this.

Previous Florida deals....

Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a 6th round pick for Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld and Bryan Allen.  Luongo was an RFA, no long term deal could be made, so they dealt Luongo, arguably the best goalie in the league and Krajicek was a decent young defenseman with some potential.  For Todd Bertuzzi who had sucked for 2 years, battling legal issues and was a shell of his former self, not to mention injury prone.  Alex Auld a good young goalie, but unproven and did not last in FLA.  Bryan Allen was a decent defenseman.

Olli Jokinen for Nick Boynton, Keith Ballard, and a 2nd round pick.  Ballard, good young defenseman, Boynton was on waivers last year and a 2nd round pick, worth nothing really.  All of that for 2 years of an all-star center.

Now, Previous deals for Elite Defenseman.

Chris Pronger for Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka and Doug Lynch.

Chris Pronger for 2 1st rounder, a 2nd rounder, Joeffry Lupol and Ladislav Smid

Dan Boyle for Matt Carle, Ty Wishart and a 4th round pick

You have to think, FLA isn't as smart based on previous deals, so they won't be getting as good as a deal EDM got for Pronger.  More along the St. Louis deal.  A NHL defenseman, good but not elite prospect, a lower prospect and a 1st-2nd round pick.

My offer to FLA, would be.....

2010 first round pick, Andrew Ference, Peter Schaefer (salary reasons), and Vladimir Sobotka/Carl Soderberg for Jay Bouwmeester.

I am not going to overpay knowing he will be a UFA next season and we have TONS of money to spend.

Not enough, even for Florida. 1st, 2nd, Hamill, Sheafer.

lashoff, axelsson, alberts/stuart, and a 1st could get it done. or maybe lashoff, axelsson, soderberg/wheeler/marchard/hamill and a 1st.

Krecji, Marchand, Stuart for Bowser. But would love to keep Stuart and instead give Alberts

Pretty good Matt. How about Ference, Schaefer, Axelsson and a 1st round pick sounds good to me. Could be another prospect in that deal. What do you think?? Fallse Ont.

not sure what combo of players it would take but these are who I would be willing to part ways with for BO...

Alberts
Ference
Schaeffer
Lashoff
Soderberg
Stuart
Hamill
Axelsson

..and any combination of draft picks. J-Bo is only 24/25! Imagine this..

Z, Ward, Wideman, Ward, Bo
Hnidy, Ference/Alberts/Stuart
...that is a solid Defensive core

great post MATT!

wow, if this happens i will poop. bouwmeester could definitely solidify this team... although i wouldn't get my hopes up yet.

No, it would be a significant player to go.

I say, we dont jump on this. 1 year left on contract, and we just saw how Wideman cashed in. JB will command much more next season, probably test the market, all to see significant pieces of the Bruins puzzle to end up in Florida.

trade axelsson. does he really fit on the bruins anymore? great player, but just doesn't fit. throw-in some ahl players and a couple picks...booyah. look at florida's lines...wouldn't axe fit well there? my money is on this move...

It says MAY BE. So it is not going to happen. The B's just don't go out and get good players. We resign and overpay for players who are old and or injury prone.

hahha. and axelsson fits in the bruins still - given our defensive minded strategy and hes a defensive forward...

Bruins offering the best package?? Wonder if that starts with kessel. Him and Lucic are the only young players I would say no to dealing.

I have said it 20 times before in previous posts - I would trade Kessel in a heartbeat if we could land someone like Bouwmeester. Hate to break it to all of you but Kessel is highly overrated. His stock is high now so make the move before you get to trade him for a box of hammer handles and a wheelbarrow.

axelsson does NOT fit. we need 2-way players (like bergeron, savard (now), shaffer (when he wants to), nokialainen (in a few yrs), kobasew, etc). axelsson would be better on a team that doesn't play the trap (or left-wing-lock). trap hockey is played better with speedy scorers...so you don't need defensive forwards (see NJ).
Go watch basebull. Axelsson is a steal for the right team...like florida!

i'm really hoping bergeron can play...and he isn't to f'ed-up from the hit. i bet fernandez plays for a contract though...should be good.

I just want to go on record as saying that I was the 1st person to say that the B's should go after Bouwmeester...on this site. I was saying this 2 months ago - Kessel, Wideman and a pick...get it done!

Whoaaaaaaa...this is all interesting rhetoric but.....the Bs are against the cap. They are only going to trade for Jay if she signs an extention. The price tag for an extension would be 7 million per season. Any deal would have to include Savard or Bergeron, plus 2 d-men.

10:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok I feel confident in saying that Bouwmeester would demand big money for a contract extension, but not quite 7 million, and the Bruins are about a million and a half under the cap right now, if schaeffer goes, that is just over 2 million, then maybe a million in smaller names, giving them four million this season, and with Fernandez coming off the books next year, and the cap increasing, they could afford the extension, and they have Rask to replace Fernandez. I mean I always get let down by these trade rumors, but I don't think it would be unrealistic to imagine the Bruins going after Bouwmeester.

Savard or Bergeron, plus 2 Dmen??? Jay Bo is NOT worth either of those 2 players, let alone 2 dmen thrown in!!! Interesting people believe he is worth even one of our top 2 centers. Especially with Wideman and Chara in the mix taking 11+ off our cap. So, with an eventual pay increase that he is due, (around 6 or 7 mill) that would mean the Bruins would tie up almost 18 million in 3 defensemen? All while ditching one of its prized centers that we are building around??? Thats just crazy. No way PC ever spends 30% of our cap on 3 defensemen.

Just becasue there are rumors, doesnt mean we need to project Jay B as some super stellar guy! He is very solid, but merely doing what Hossa did. Cashing in.

Jay 24 Lots of good years a head of him. 6mil. I would pay in a heart beat. This guy is on one of the worst teams and always has decent numbers inmy eyes Jay is one of the best up in coming Defencemen. PC said he put a offer in on Boyle so I cant see why PC wouldnt try to land Jay Fallse Ont.

Whats the salary percentage on Wings, Ducks Defence. Sorry Jefey 77 this is how you build to win cups, is on defence just look at the devils 2 through 5 years ago they were aways right there. Fallse Ont.

3:36 PM
Blogger Jefe77 said...

Not by trading one of your top centers, thats for sure. The Devils cultured Stevens and Niedermeyer, and of course always had Brodeuer there. Those 3 were the absolute foundation of those cups. Look what happened when Stevens and Niedermeyer left. I dont think the devils would ever be dumb enough to pay top dollar for pricey UFA's. Gomez, Rafalski and Holik are prime examples. Thats why Lou is so succesful. He doesnt jump on any over rated and over marketed UFA's.

The Ducks acquired Pronger, a Norris winner with almost 500 career points for Lupul a 50 point scorer. They had the depth to do it, and the cap space to sign Niedermeyer who came at a discount to play with his brother, around 3.5 if I remember correctly. That put them around 10 million for 2 Norris, HOF'er dmen. Different story, and they had plenty of cap room to round out depth with O' Donnel, Beauchemin and Jackman.

The Wings payed Lidstrom 7.5, and Rafalski who cashed in at 6, which is only 13.5 for maybe the next best d-man after Bourque, along with a the highest sought UFA dman.

Kronwall comes in 3rd at 1.5.
Of course they picked up Stuart at the deadline, and those 4 total 18.5. But those 4 for 18.5 as opposed to the 17 - 18 the Bruins would have to spend on Chara, Wideman and Jay B doesnt compare, for the number of players or quality. Yet.

That would be great to have Jay B on the Bruins. But its not going to happen unless we move more players, so that if we do sacrifice something significant for him we will have cap room to sign him to a new long term deal.

Wicked Reply Jefe 77 !!!! I just think Jay is top 2 D men Widemen 3 maybe 4 dont get me wrong hes good on the PP just not top 2 not yet anyways. I would probably move Widemen for Jay in a second. Fallse Ont.

This is what happens when you spend so much of the cap on defensemen acquired by free-agency:

Brian McCabe $5+ mil
Thomas Kaberle $5 mil
Pavel Kubina $5 mil
Hal Gill $2 mil

They all suck (save for Kaberle) and so do the leafs. Thgis is when the cap was just over 40mil...so that's a kick in the nuts! You can't BUY defense, it needs to be built from the farm a la detroit. Bouwmeester would be nice, but we've picked our guy.

I agree, Jay B would be in our top 2, but I think Mook summed it up best; the best way to develop D is to build it from within the system, and I think we have some great young prospects who deserve some patience. I also think that our young forwards are worth that as well.

You make an excellent point that D wins cups; and if we can make a good run this season and attract some attention, then hopefully guys like Jay B will want to come here, and work with our cap like Hossa did for D.

Bruins for the Cup!!!

Happy Sunday all; and sweet icon BruinsFan35!

Jefe 77 I agree with you alot but our defensive prospect our anything but great. Mook did Detroit draft Rafalski, Stuart, Chelios, and two years ago Markov, Schneider. thats hardly a good example. Building within your system is the way but you still get players that after the green and dont care about loyality to a team. Fallse Ont.

1:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe the Rangers is a better example, but Detroit has the best scouts in the league by a long-shot. Maybe we should be going after them...although Lucic and some of these other kids aren't disappointing!
Just saying Detroit was already loaded (zetts and all those other freaks playing under 3mil) because of good drafting...the could afford to add a few pieces, but they are just ADDING not building from them.

Our defensive prospects look pretty good IMO if we're considering Stuart...we just have some fat to trim (Alberts...pun intended).

What happened to the Schnieder talk? Mathieu Schenider making pinpoint outlet passes to our speedy wingers sounds and would look very good to me, don't get too excited about Bowmeester...he is an Edmonton boy and we know how the Oilers like to toss large sums of money around here lately, keep that in mind next year when he is a FA! Good point about the Oilers. Dude thats what I said 2 wks ago and all I got was hes old, injury pron, and to much money but I feel ya hes a great passer and sweet release from the point he would be a perfect fit. Say he does get hurt, thats when you let the kids run with the ball. Fallse Ont.

Its no secret that the Ducks are looking to move some salary, espically if Selanne decides to come back, Schneider's price tag will be a whole lot smaller than Bowmeester's, and since we let Goncher go(who was only around for a playoff run) we haven't had a legit puck moving dman since Bourque! I think P.C shits the bed here if he doesn't get that dman....guys i don't need to tell you about last year's playoffs, Bergy,Kobasew out...Chara was banged up, Ward.....and we still went 7.With the addition of Ryder(solid 35-40 goals) and that one puck moving dman we can go deep into the playoffs. k guys, this thread is dead. quit beating a dead hoarse, PC is done. We got 1 player (and Bergeron back). Chia thinks this is it, we are good enough. Personally I don't think so, I think we could use a bit more tinkering, but hey I don't have a say in the team that I love.

I don't think they need any tinkering at all. They've added a couple players, have some coming back, and have a lot of decent looking prospects trying to make the team - all with questions that can only be answered by training camp and playing games. I also don't see any point in 'tinkering' with what little cap space is left.

Give the guys you've got a chance to show what they've got. and go from there.

Trade Kessel. He is still developing, I understand that, but he doesn't seem very aware for such a highly rated player. I also understand he needs to work on his defensive play, but I have also seen him stand around and do nothing in the offensive zone once the hitting started.
Trade him now and get the best defenceman available. If he improves in the future , good for him, but I predict he will hang around for another two or three seasons and then he's done.
