Salary Cap Update

Peter Chiarelli did an interview today on WEEI's "Dale and Holley Show". They asked Chiarelli a question regarding the cap and rookie bonuses that I was very curious about myself. In sum, rookie bonuses count towards the cap number but the league is giving teams "bonus cushions" allowing teams to exceed the cap total by that amount. If the bonuses are reached by the player then they count against the cap for that year. If there is no cap room available it counts against the next year cap. Unlike this season where the entire cap number, including bonuses would count against the cap without bonus cushion clauses allowing them to excede the cap.

So for example, Blake Wheeler's cap hit is $2.825 million. Last season that would have counted all against the cap. This upcoming season, since his base salary is only $875,000, it gives the Bruins an additional $1.95 million to spend. If Wheeler does in fact reach those bonuses, then at the end of the season they affect the cap.

Additionally, the same rules apply to all other rookies who have rookie bonuses in their contracts. Therefore the Bruins will be given an additional $2.35 million from Tuuka Rask's contract and $.075 from Vladmir Sobotoka's contract, assuming both are on the team next season.

Here is a quick update looking at next season cap total:
Lucic (850K)-Savard ($5million)- Kessel (RFA)
Wheeler (875K) - Krejci (RFA) - Ryder ($4 million)
Sturm ($3.5million) - Bergeron ($4.75 million) - Kobasew ($2.2million)
Sobotka (625K)- Bitz (RFA) - Thornton (517K)

Forwards under contract - 9
Forwards needed to sign - 3 (Krejci, Kessel, Bitz all RFA)
Forward total cap number - $22.317 million

Chara ($7.5 million) - Ward ($2.5 million)
Ference ($1.4 million) - Wideman ($3.875 million)
Stuart ($1.5 million) - Hunwick (RFA)

Defensemen under contract - 5
Defensemen needed to sign - 1
Defensemen total cap number - $16.775 million

Tim Thomas ($5 million)
Tuuka Rask (850K)
Goaltenders under contract - 2
Goaltenders total cap number - $5.850 million

Total cap number - $44.942 milliom

Assuming the cap will be around $55 million, that leaves the Bruins with $10 million to spend on Krejci, Kessel, Hunwick, and Bitz. So this allows the Bruins to keep Rask to be Thomas' backup next season, without his entire cap hit affecting the cap. Assuming he is the backup and Thomas receives the bulk of the playing time, the bonuses in his contract would be virtually impossible to trigger.

Note: Glen Murray's buyout is still on the books for $1.383 million next season. Murray has gone through the first two steps of his appeal. Assuming the NHL rules in favor of Murray then his buyout cap number comes off the books. The expected decision is due in July.

Cap room? Jarome Iginla's contract is $7 million a season. He's not going anywhere anyway.

Savard's not going anywhere. I don't know why we wouldnt keep our highest point scorer for the last 3 seasons, and the playoffs.

why are we even talking about Iginla? lmao he's not moving.

I agree with the James, I think the Bruins could look at moving Kobasew, who despite some moderate sucess, is really a moderately successful grinder. With Bitz and Sobotka, and Recchi wanting to return, Kobasew is the odd man out due to his 2.3 million dollar contract. Would be nice to see him back, but I wouldn't shed a tear to see him go if it made sense.

i'd rather see sturm leave then kobasew. i like them both, but kobasew is a right wing, recchi, sturm and sobotka would all play left wing. and kobasew makes more than a million less than sturm.

and kobasew is one of those gritty forwards that i think pc wants more of. he is a 20 goal scorer, hits, goes to the front of the net and even fights once in a while. sturm makes more sense, even though he would have to waive his no trade clause.

why couldn't the canes play like THAT against us?

10:04 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

hopefully the canes play better and win this series. the worse the canes play the worse it makes the bruins look. plus i dont want cindy to win although i am a fan of malkin, guerin and kunitz.

and i hate pittsburgh fans especially if they win 2 of the 4 major sports this year... yeah i kno pirates will always suck and pittsburgh is too shitty for a basketball team.

Yeah, sure... As a GM i'm gonna trade for a guy who had a concussion and a major knee injury. The 4 per cap hit is irrevelant

seriously? i feel that the opposite is right...

ryder has no value? bergeron? sturm?

12:02 AM
Anonymous psands said...

i think somebody would want sturm, the guy has his problems but is a proven goal scorer, and teams will always take a chance to bring in a goal scorer....remember ryder?

it does not matter all that much what we get back, it would have to be more of a salary dump. maybe a pick and a mid level prospect.

how can you say ryder and bergeron have no trade value? bergeron is still young and i think will be back to his normal 60-70 points next year....thoughts?

5:34 PM
Anonymous James said...

ill agree with anon and say i dont think bergeron has much trade value. 2 concussions and a subpar season (point wise) may scare some away. i thought he played great 2 way hockey but gms around the league would look at stats first. disagree with ryder and sturm, im sure both have value especially since their salaries are relatively low for 30 goal scorers. i dont think kobasew has much value because he is a smaller played but plays 30 pounds bigger then he is, a reason why he gets hurt quite often. i still think ward is a guy they need to try and move just so they can fit everyone in.

your welcome cindy. we beat them up for you.

Exactly; we handed them a trip to the finals.

Personally, I wanted this. I despise the dirty Canes and it doesnt make the Bruins look any less strong. It says to me the Bruins were that much closer when they played their game to being a team that could have made the finals.

I could say alot about who I think has trade value, but one player I want to talk about is Patrice. He won't be moved, but if you want to talk about his value it's much larger than some seem to be giving him credit for.

The guy played his cards right this season and will return to form offensively. He was smart to play it safe after that second concussion, and played carefully but progressively more physically throughout the season. It wasnt as easy for him to match his point totals because he played more of a checking line role than he had before.

No way, can the Bruins afford to lose this guy with his two way game, his passion for the Bruins and hockey IQ.

I think Patrice will be the next captain of the Bruins after Z.

11:39 PM
Anonymous James said...

either patrice or lucic. it may be asking too much for lucic to take it so young though. so the year after chara leaves patrice the c lucic and stuart get as.

either way even if pittsburgh swept a depleted team they have no chance against detroit.

I'm thinking the Bruins could possibly throw something big out there at the draft. I'm not sure it'll be something we'll be excited about, but the way things sit right now, something's gotta give. Too many guys they'd want to lock up and not enough space.

6:59 PM

da wreck, i agree. they gotta think about lucic, savard, and chara after this season.

Lucic-Savard-
Sturm-Bergeron-Kobasew
Wheeler-Krejci-Ryder
Thorton-Sobtoka-Bitz

Chara-Ward
Wideman-
Stuart-Hunwick

Thomas
Rask

Kessel- Will be signed and traded to fill that D man spot and will also get a draft pick.

Will sign a big winger and maybe resign Yelle for depth.

These are my predictions..anyone else?

i think the bruins will hold onto both krejci and kessel. i see them moving a kobasew, ryder, or a ward to fit them in thouh. i really hope sobotka is on this team replacing yelle and axelsson. bitz taking the other spot. the fourth line (axe, yelle, thornton) generated nuthing in the carolina series. having younger quicker players could have potted a goal or two .

chara-stuart(stuart really stepped up in playoffs)
wideman-hunwick
mcquaid-boychuk
hnidy

thomas
rask

i know that the defense is really young, but i think all those guys are nhl ready, except i dont know all that much about mcquaid, but i hear he's like stuart or ward, a shutdown guy. i dont know if its such a great idea to go so young on d, but i think it could work out.

its hard to not include sturm, ward and ference in the lineup but we have to get rid of money, and we did all we did last year without sturm, ward has a pretty big salary, and ference has a hard time staying healthy.thoughts......

Trade Thoughts:

1.Kessel for Dion Phaneuf - prob taking on at least 2 to $2.5M more in salary (Phaneuf gets paid $6.5M per)
2. Ference for a 3rd round pick or prospect (Salary Dump - $1.4M)
3. Sturm for Upshall and Dawes - both are RFA, combined should only make 2 - $2.5M - Savings of $1-$1.5M

3:46 PM

i think u misunderstood my post gibby, i want reich back on the team, and he is a free agent so we can not trade him. same with hnidy.

and im pretty sure that phaneuf is not going anywhere.

since axelsson is such a team player, why not retire and join the coaching staff. that way he contributes helps everyone defensively and doesnt kill any line hes on.

7:19 PM
Blogger Jefe77 said...

Even though I was obviously joking in my lineup post, I have always liked PJ and credited him as one of the best pure defensive forwards in the league.

I doubt he'll retire as he has some hockey left in him, and to be honest I wouldnt be that surpised to see him sign a cheaper deal and stay in Boston.

No reason to be there unless you had a top 10 pick. Any thoughts?

12:41 AM
Blogger Gibby4 said...

anonymous, what do you mean phil kessel to ottawa?

11:53 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

he means that if cam is there for a top 10 pick, kess could be on the move for that top 10 pick, id want a power forward who can produce in the playoffs for kessel. on another note, did anyone notice that the bruins were far less intimidating than other teams around the league after the whistle and i believe because julien told them to stay "disciplined". But adding emotion to the team with a scrum after the whistle, like we did in game 5 against carolina is what boston needed. i resented him being adamant on playing between the whistles as the bruins are one of the toughest teams top to bottom in the league

i think if we were going to trade phil, it would be to a Western Conference team, so he wouldnt be a factor in the standings for the bruins. but really trade away your leading goal scorer that is only 21 yrs old. i dont think so, do you know how many people would be upset in boston, i really dont think that we would want that.

gibler i agree. keeping kessel is a must. trade ward free up the money to sign both kessel and krejci.

i think they're testing to see if there happens to be an offer sheet, is it worth their while to resign. tampa does not need their #2 pick given the youth of the existing team. i could see a blockbuster deal happening...

theres nhl network in the states thats hockey all day. you just have to be lucky to get it is all.

8:50 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

no tsn covers all sports, but there are dedicated hockey shows which run for 30 or 60 minutes...(molson that's hockey, etc)
we also have sportsnet (hockey insider), the score and tsn2 which have their own hockey shows. however there is definitely emphasis on hockey during recaps(unfortunately on friggen curling too, during the tournaments).

nhl network is available here too, but it sucks the big one. not in HD either.

10:21 AM

is there any chance to get tsn in the states. i was thinking about nhl network but have heard from a few people that it sucks. hows nhl centerice?

nhl center ice is a good place to watch games...bruins games are mostly in HD when NESN is the broadcast. they have no update channel though, and yes nhl network sucks large.

i'm sure there's a way to get tsn...depends where you live, i suppose. personally i prefer sportsnet which is a rogers broadcast.
