Has Chiapet really been bad?

Let's go over his deals...

1) Acquired Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft. Razor ended up sucking in TO. He may never been the Calder goaltender he once was. Boston got the best goalie prospect in the world. He could turn out to be the next Hasek for all we know.
VERDICT: Great trade

2) Acquired Paul Mara and a pick from Phoenix for Nick Boynton and a pick. Boynton was alright at the time, and Mara was a Rafalskilike player. At the time, it seemed like a nice deal. Boynton ended up on waivers, so...
VERDICT: Alright trade
2b) Acquired Aaron Ward from the New York Rangers for Aaron Ward. At the time we all wanted Mara out. He was misused by Lewis. Trading Mara may have been a mistake, but at the time it seemed necessary. Ward is overpaid, but he is a nice vetern defenseman who can make plays and is rarely out of position.
VERDICT: Even trade...slight edge NYR.

3) Signed Zdeno Chara to a 5 year deal at 7.5 per. We all liked it, shut up. Happy as hell. His play may have not backed it, but he is a great defenseman.
VERDICT: Good signing.

4) Signed Marc Savard to a 4 year deal at 5 per. An amazing deal. Savard churned out 92 points on a shitty team. Best bargain of the offseason, hell of the new NHL.
VERDICT: Amazing signing.

5) Signed Shean Donovan to a 2 year deal at .925 per. Was supposed to be a nice 3rd line winger with speed. Never really did much.
VERDICT: Bland signing. Didn't hurt or help the team.
5b) Acquired Peter Shaefer from the Ottawa Senators for Shean Donovan. A now spare-part 4th liner for a potential top 6 winger, who had 20 and 30 2 years ago.
VERDICT: Great trade.

6) Signed Mark Mowers to a 2 year deal at .463 per. Loved in Detroit. Was a great PKer and solid 4th liner. He provides depth to the team. Now a 4th liner or 13th forward.
VERDICT: Solid signing

7) Signed Jason York to a 1 year deal at .5. Okay, Ottawa connection. Thought he'd be a NICE 7th defenseman, not 6th. Wasn't PC's fault! It was Lewis.
VERDICT: Solid signing

8) Signed Nathan Dempsey to a 1 year deal. 8th defenseman, didn't do much, didn't take cap room. Sort of nothing with him.
VERDICT: Pointless signing

9) Signed Petr Tenkrat to a 1 year deal. We all loved Petr. Scored some goals..was a true warrior. Liked him a lot, but didn't see a spot for him this season.
VERDICT: Nice signing

10) Signed Wade Brookbank to a 1 year deal. Wade who? Never did anything. Was supposed to be a tough guy. Didn't see much in the signing.
VERDICT: Pointless signing

10b) Traded Wade Brookbank to Pittsburgh for Future Considerations. Getting rid of him was amazing. Otherwise we would have lost 450,000 in cap space rather than the 90k we already paid him.
VERDICT: Pointless trade, but helped

11) Signed Jeff Hoggan to a 1 year deal. A depth guy. Did his job. Need I say more?
VERDICT: Slightly not pointless signing

12) Acquired Stanislav Chistov from the Anaheim Ducks for a 3rd round pick. Okay, Chistov could turn out to be a nice winger, and the 3rd rounder has yet to be drafted, but a 3rd rounder is high for Stan, considering at the deadline you can get players for 5th rounders with better numbers.
VERDICT: Nice trade

13) Acquired a 4th round pick for Milan Jurcina. Bad deal. Lewis didn't play him, so PC traded him. I liked Jurcina. I knew it was a bad move when they dealt him.
VERDICT: Bad trade

14) Acquired Phillipe Sauve from the Coyotes for Tyler Redenbauch. Sauve sucked. Redenbach is a ok AHL guy.
VERDICT: Pointless trade

15) Acquired Bradon Bochenski from the Blackhawks for Kris Versteeg and a conditional pick. Bochenski is the man now. A potential top 6 winger. Is much better than Versteeg.
VERDICT: Good trade

16) Acquired Chuck Kobasew and Andrew Ference for Brad Stuart, Wayne Primeau, and a 4th round pick (Milan Jurcina). Ference is nice, Kobasew I need to see more. Primeau was alright here. I wish we could have resigned Brad who eventually only got 3.5 to his wanted 5 per with LA. But I didn't see why we had to give the Flames a 4th rounder.
VERDICT: Ok trade

17) Claimed Joey MacDonald off waivers. MacD played well for us.
VERDICT: Good claim

18) Signed Marco Sturm to a 4 year extension at 3.5 per. Undermarket value for Marco. Especially if he turns into a 40 goal scorer.
VERDICT: Great signing

19) Acquired Dennis Wideman from the Blues for Brad Boyes. SHIT! Awful deal. I loved Brad, cheap money for a guy who can even skate a penalty shot. Now Wideman may turn out to be a 60 point a year defenseman. But Brad was a proven top 6 winger.
VERDICT: Bad trade

20) Signed Shawn Thornton to a 3 year deal at .517 per. A great tough guy. Won't score, but will drop the gloves and add the needed grit to the lineup.
VERDICT: Solid signing

21) Signed Jeremy Reich to a 2 year deal. More grit. Nice signing. Maybe not necessary but doesn't hurt.
VERDICT: Fine signing

22) Signed Bobby Allen to a 1 year deal...again. Forgot him up top. A nice 2-way defenseman (AHL-NHL) and will travel between the teams. I like him.
VERDICT: Solid signing

23) Signed Jeff Hoggan to a 1 year deal. 2-way deal. More depth.
VERDICT: Pointless signing

24) Acquired Manny Fernandez from the Wild for Petr Kalus and a 4th round pick. What is it with these 4th rounders. Manny is a nice bridge to Rask. Kalus was a nice prospect, but nothing more. We needed a number 1 goalie to move forward.
VERDICT: Good trade

25) Acquired Carl Soderberg from the Blues for Hannu Toivonen. Hannu is a potential number 1 goalie. Why give up on him. We didn't get an NHL player in return. Soderberg is a ok prospect.
VERDICT: Bad deal.

Overall, PC has only made 3 bad trades. No bad signings. He drafted Kessel. Every GM makes mistakes. I mean people consider Lou in NJ a god. Hmm...he signed Malakhov, Mogiliny, McGillis and was in cap hell for it. He also has Bryzin, and Madden taking up roster space. Didn't sign Niedermayer or Rafalski who both left.

Evey trade isn't going to make people happy, but PC has done a fine job so far. Now when he trades Bergeron and Kessel for Sturm, Primeau and Stuart, then come and talk to me.

BUT don't give him that much credit...the best deal on there was signing savard to the deal, but that wasn't even chiarelli...that was gorton, wasnt it?

Should be noted that #3 and #4 was organized by Gorton in ChiaPet's absense, and with the help of Bruins alum like Cam. He should not listen to Hughie Lewis who was wlaking up and down the bench seeing red and white and Red Wings all over. Jurcina, Boyes and Toivonen were bad trades - and I even think Mara was a bad trade as he looked better in NYR, when he was allowed to play his style of game and not Lewis'

i think the pickup of Bochenski was one of the most under-rated moves he is a pure scorer and cant wait to c him for a full year! when traded for him i didn't wat think but it was a great trade!

Chia-puppet had nothing to do with the Rask trade or the signings of Chara and Savard. He was still the assistant GM in Ottawa!!

I think that Toivonen was a little too bad in Providence to show the rest of the league his potential. Chia's hands were a little tied on this one since I am sure that having Rask, Toivonen, and Regan all fighting for spots in Providence would do nothing for the development of these guys.

As for the Boyes trade, Wideman had better get really damn good really damn fast. Maybe Chia was afraid that Boyes would command big money, but I don't think he needed to be traded.

The Boyes/Jurcina were dumb because they were made for the wrong reasons.

Absolutely agree. Both those players have potential to be top 6 and top 4 in this league.

Rask and Savard were Gorton I think

When you look at it: Kalus, Veersteeg, Boyes, Jurcina and Toivonen are all gone. I'm not saying that trading Kalus was necessary bad because they adressed a need but that's a lots of young players who are gone. I don't see how you can build a competitive team if you deal away your promising players. I have the bad feeling that Boston is becoming the official farm club of the entire NHL..

Na, that is still Toronto, but you make a good point.

Jurcina was absolutely a bad deal. Just because he is super tall and Slovakian doesn't mean we had to toss him aside when we got Chara. Jurcina has been a stud in Washington and they treat him that way. A 4th rnd pick, seriously, no big young defneseman that gets regular ice time should be traded for just a 4th round pick.

I wasn't Boyes's biggest fan, and honestly, I think his market was inflated after the month or so of lights out play with Bergy and Sturm. If we kept him we'd have overpaid for him because the fans liked him. I think getting something in return rather than let him go later on was a decent - not good - move.

I've like PC from day 1..I've still got faith in him. It takes some time to turn a bunch of shit bums into winners. Stop the hating

I wish we had more insight as to his rational we have a lot of spectulation as to why players are moved but we don't hear about the guys that just cant get it together off the ice or in the locker room

For everybodys saying that trading Hannu was such a bad move lets get a few things straight..first Hannu had a horrible season last year 3-9-1 4.23 not many teams are drooling over those numbers.Second we have a logjam of goalies Hannu was not going to play...he had to be moved. So for all you experts who keep saying what a bad deal this is lets have some patience for all we know this kid Soderberg could be Calder canadate next year. I think under the circumstnces P.C got the best value for a damaged product.

Damaged product...

This product was damaged by the Bruins and only them. To give up on a young player for a bad season is plainly stupid. The Sabres wouldn't have Miller between their pipes if they choosed to follow B's developing plan. There was too many example of great goaltenders who developed in their mid 20's. Montreal trade Kiprusoff and Vokoun because they " sucked ". Both of them are now great goaltenders. In this cap era, developing players will be the difference between a contending team and a winning one. Sign free agents as a quick fixes didn't work for the B's. But,still, the trade away young players and wish for the best. A nice receipe for failure.

How did Boston "damage" poor Hannu? Will he be a great goaltender someday? maybe. All im saying is its too early to say how bad this trade is. For all we know Hannu might not be in the NHL in two years same goes for Soderberg so stop pissing and moaning about what a bad move this was.As of right now we shipped a shaky and somewhat injury prone goalie who had a penchant for giving up HORRIBLE!! goals. For a young talented center/winger with size and scoring ability, granted with his own baggage and injuries. Sounds like an even trade to me.Time will tell.

When you sit a young player on the bench instead of sending him in Providence for playing time; that's what i call scraping someone. Toivonen was mishandle and most people agree on this.

It would have been much easier to get him some playing time if every time he was put in he was just plain not good. I know the bruins defense and their team as a whole were awful. But good goalies can carry bad teams. Lets face it how many "goalies of the future" were the bruins supposed to carry? Rask is going to get the majority of the playing time in providence.nd with your rationale if Hannu isn't playing everyday he is at risk of being even more "damaged"

ummm... if my teachers graded like that, I wouldn't have been a b- student. I'm not saying that Chia's been bad, but to call 39% of his moves great is a little lame. Even a great GM only makes a few great moves in his career. Like, say, getting Joe Thornton for a 2nd line winger, a 4th line forward and a defensively questionable defenseman.

BUT, Chia-puppet had NOTHING to do with the Rask trade or the Chara, Savard signings!!!! So, remove those points from for list. Also, te Jurcina trade should be a negative 4!!!! I'm not impressed so far at all. Just your typical Jacobs puppet at work.

still not sure about this ward for ward deal mentioned above but here goes. I agree for the most part on the assessment of some of the trades. Still hate losing Boyes, hes going to be a producer for St Louis. I think the best move was firing Lewis and hiring Julien. Last year sucked and much of that can be attributed to poor coaching. Too many many on the ice penalities, once in a while i can live with that but come on put the glue down and coach. At least he had the parts to admit he made a mistake with Lewis and correct it. Could have been very easy to leave him there for another year and see what happens. Lets see how this team goes, give them a chance, one more defenceman would be nice.
