B's Offseason

1) Acquired Adam McQuaid from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a 5th round pick. A good aquisition. McQuaid will be a solid prospect who could help out the team in a few seasons. He is better than what you likely would draft at the 5th slot anyways.

2) Acquired Manny Fernandez from the Minnesota Wild for Petr Kalus and a 4th round pick. A great addition for the B's. Manny is a perfect bridge to Tuukka Rask. Manny is a real number 1 goaltender with a GAA under 3. The B's haven't had a number 1 goalie since Byron Dafoe and haven't had a good goalie season since Razor's rookie year. Manny will provide consistancy between the pipes.

3) Signed Shawn Thornton to a 3 year/1.55 million dollar deal. A necessary signing. I don't really like the length, but I like the player. Cheap money, so again the length isn't a huge concern. Thornton will provide grit, which the B's lacked. Look for over 100 PIM by him.

4) Signed Bobby Allen to a 1 year, 2-way deal. A good depth signing. I really liked Allen last season. He will be a great 7th-8th defenseman on the team. He also has a little cap hit due to the likeliness that he plays in Providence.

5) Signed Jeremy Reich to a 2 year/975,000 deal. Not sure on this one. They had just signed Thornton, so I thought that was to take Reich's spot. But then again, a guy like Reich and Thornton on the same line could be scary.

6) Acquired Peter Schaefer from the Ottawa Senators for Shean Donovan. A great deal. They traded a spair part winger for a potential top six winger. He can score 20 and have 50 points easily.

#7 should read.
Traded PJ Axelsson, the most overrated player in the history of the Bruins, along with Toivonen for a top six winger. This deal makes the team complete and gives them 3 solid scoring lines.

Axelsonn is not overrated, you just set high expectations for a defenseive foward, him and Sheafer should be a solid PK combo. Getting a top 6 foward would make this team complete, I have faith in the defensemen in Providence to focus on a top 6 foward.

I agree with bruinshockey08. I think Toivonen should absolutely be enough bait to dangle out there with someone like Mowers and get a top 6 guy.

One thing that worries me about this team is our centers. They are all very talented, but they are all relatively small-to-average size, quick puck handlers. I wouldn't mind acquiring a big-power top 6 center and work on moving Kessel to the wing.

Well Savard may be small but he does not take alot of shit for a small guy like him, kind of reminds me of Stock but without the guts to fight. Overall I am not worried about the size of the center because they are strong on their skates and that is a big plus, kets just hope Bergeron can stay healthy all year. I think Boston should trade Thomas, because he cost more and I think Hannu will have a bounce back season. Only reason Toivonen had a tough season last year is Dave Lewis only played him once a month, that is not a fair thing to ask from a young goalie, when Hannu played for providence he played very well, Julien take note play Toivo more than once a month, and he will get you some good results.

trading axelsson is a good idea. imagine 3 lines of scoring and a fourth line or reich-mowers-thornton or even sub mowers for walter of thompson. now that would be sick.

Another top 6 forward would be nice, but I think they need another defensmen who can log a lot of minutes. Last season Chara logged almost 28 minutes a game. The next closest player was Ward with 20 minutes a game. They need another defensmen who can log the big minutes and take the pressure off Chara. I like Stuart and Lashoff, but I don't think they are ready to log that many minutes in the NHL yet. However, they may make Wideman and Ward expendable and as such tradebait.

I made a mistake in my last comment I meant Stuart and Lashoff may make Wideman and Alberts (not Ward) expendable.

Alberts is a good defenseman why on earth would you trade him? Wideman, has not had a chance to prove himself yet, so I think he deserves a chance. Ward is a solid defenseman. Here is how I would pair the defensemen as is:

Chara-Alberts
Allen-Ference
Ward-Wideman

The Bruins defense in my mind is set, we need a scorer for the second line, if we can do that we would be a contender.

I really wouldn't want to trade Alberts or Wideman. I agree with you they are both solid D. But last year the Bruins let in far too many goals and this year they have the same defensive core. Something needs to change. And Chara cannot keep logging 28 minutes a game while everyone else is only getting around 20 if that. I just don't think Alberts and Wideman are good enough right now to log the big minutes and the Bruins need someone who can. If they can land someone like that by letting Wideman or Alberts go I would be for it.

Wideman is rated by many scouts as a #6 D-man. He could be expendable but i'l doubt it happend. The B's commit with a 1 year deal on Wideman which indicate that the team is not " that high " on him. But, even if Lashoff have a better camp, Wideman will crack the lineup because of the " politics ". The signing of Reich puzzled me a bit. It's good that have 4th liners but Thornton was already signed so, for me, Reich salary is a cap waste. Allen have a 2 ways contract and i don't see him cracking the lineup this year.

sorry, i do appologize, ward is the most overrated player next to axelsson. i dont understand why people think hes a number 2 defenseman on anyteam. hes clearly a number 5 or 6 defenseman and should only be used in that role. if hes our #2 hell be over exposed and all of us will realize he is hal gill the third. i do agree with gm that alberts may be on the move as i do believe lashoff and stuart are options as well. could see one of the three packaged with a goaltender for a stronger defenseman.

Why all the complaints about Wideman? We traded a top 6 forward (Boyes) for him, so he's a keeper this year. say you trade PJ and Thomas for a top 9 forward. Then we have 3 strong lines. ** The Bruins should try to trade for Torres from edmonton**** By the way, why all the complaints and rumors about trading Hannu? I like the kid and I think he still has potential. Get rid of thomas, who we don't need and keep Hannu. The defense is solid right now, the Bruins should keep it. Let the kids grow. grab a foward and then you have a strong team to try to get in the playoffs. Lines would be:
Savard- Murray- Kobesaw
Bergeron- Sturm- Bochenski
Kessel- Schaefer- **Torres****
Mowers- Thornton- Reich- or Krecji?

Defense:
Chara- Allen
Alberts- Wideman
Ference- Ward

Sign Sopel or Sutton. I think we all understand that two-ways and the AHL is supposed to provide depth and development. AHL signings are not supposed to provide the team with their top six defensemen. The GAA last year was brutal. Chara was misused and is not a 25 minute guy. The need is for another top three d-man and a solid power forward.

There's one site who talked about Nashville. I didn't saw this roumour elsewhere. Maybe it's an " Eklund " rumour-a-like...

Justin, I agree we should sign Brent Sopel but we simply can not afford it, we need a top 6 foward more then we need defense. we have approx. 3 million left under the cap if I did my numbers right, unless Sopel is willing to take a 2 million dollar per season contract (which is far) that would leave us with 1 million to spend and then we trade axelsonn (1.850mil) and Thomas (1.2 mil) for a 3 to 4 million dollar a year scorer then it might work.

What about the idea of trading Aaron Ward and Thomas for a top 9 forward? That would clear up cap space and get the forward we need to have 3 strong lines. Stuart or Lashoff could take Ward's position.

Defense:
Chara-Allen
Wideman-Alberts
Ference-Lashoff/Stuart

Still a solid unit. What do u think?

We already have enough top 9 fowards thats the real issue here, we need that one guy who can put 20-25 goals up on the board on a consistant basis, and the only guy we have on the team that might be good enough for that is chuck kobasew.
