Northeast Division: Free Agent Update

The Ottawa Senators have signed Alexei Kovalev to a 2 year $10 million dollar contract. Interesting move especially with the Senators only having around $2 million in cap space available. Danny Heatley may in fact end up in Edmonton after all.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have also signed Francois Beauchemin to a three year $11.4 million deal. Beauchemin's deal is similar to the one Wideman signed a season ago, with a cap hit around $3.8 million. In addition to Beauchemi, the Maple Leafs previously inked Mike Komisarek and Colton Orr.

bruins = toast for 09-10 season. every single team in the division got better minus buffal and bruins. could be a long yr here in boston :[

gikerboy i disagree. if heatley is gone and all they add is kovalev then they get worse. toronto still sucks. komisarek is over rated and over paid. ill give you orr (who makes them much tougher) just because hes a scary boy who would destroy thornton.

well im wrong for sayin that cuz we r jus lookin at the players on paper and statstic wise. it rlly depends on the regular season. im rlly jus mad at chia cuz he didnt make a splash at all in the free agent market, besides re-signing recchi

signing the bruins own players was more important then making a splash. this team did record 116 points without sturm and having krejci and kessel injuried all season. another year of progression for players like krejci kessel lucic bergeron wideman hunwick etc and this team could easily be better than last season.

Gikerboy, there was never any expectations to sign any big unrestricted free agents without trading major assets. Not sure who convinced you to get your hopes up high, but I dont know any Bruins fan who expected a "splash" in the free agent market.

Who exactly did you hope to see in a Bruins jersey?? Hossa? He was the only player worth throwing money at. But for 12 years?? You need to realize and respect that Chia just took his team from the bottom to the top with 116 points in 3 seasons.

Enjoy the fact that we have most of that team returning, and remember that you simply cannot afford to sign top dollar UFA's every season. You win by drafting, developing, calculating trades correctly and signing the right UFA's at the right time, at the right price to keep your team moving forward. Not finding itself in some financial mess that breaks apart a young team so quick (See; Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lighting)....

the bruins are going to struggle?

lets try again....

the b's will hit the ice next year with almost ( ALMOST) the exact same team. we dont have "big names" or " true nhl stars" instead we have a group of guys who are all balanced with talent. dont get hard for teams that are scoring big name free agents. teams get players, and they lose players. thats the game. but if you can take a quality team and do everything you can to keep it the way it is...then leave it alone. dont fight for cap space to sign big namers, they dont mean shit.
the bruins will be sick next season. people dont realize out depth. and i love the comment some one made earlyer about bruins fans thanking the GM's later on for not making big deals when looch is a UFA. because hes 100% right. look at future UFA's and factor in cap space. no more players.

getting rid of hindy sucked..but you know hunwicks going to get a deal. montador is just trash and boychuck is going to be a kick ass 7th man.

we will be fiiiiiiiine

everything is going to be fine, saying that we are going to be toast next year is the worst comment ever made on this blog. we were a young team last year and only will get better from last years experience. it is nice to know that hunwick will definitively be back next year too.

thing is this team still does not fit under the cap and i see some moves taking place soon. not that i want to see it, but it is going to happen.

.....does anybody have any thoughts yet about my proposed deal of kessel going to tampa for malone and something else?

I agree with psands. We were a young team last year, and PC tweaked it just a bit. Took out Yelle and added Begin and re-signed Recchi. We will be fine.

I also think there is a move coming. There has to be. Bruins do not have enough cap space to sign both Hunwick and Kessel, so somebody has to go.

I'm not sold on Malone. Granted, he is big and would look good in a B's jersey. But he has a 4.5 million cap hit, which means we would have to move someone else as well, just to fit him in. Also, at 4.5 million, we could keep Kessel and have more points.

If Kessel goes, it needs to be for a big name. And it will also have to include another roster player to allow the player returning to fit under the cap. With that being said, I have a feeling it won't be Kessel going. Maybe Sturm or Kobasew so that PC can re-sign Kessel, and have some cap space.

Guys... I know the B's folks that are here all the time will agree with me, but who do you think the Bruins need?

They have the best Defensman in all of the league, our own Norris Trophy winning Zdeno Chara. We have a still young Wideman, Ferrence, Hunwick combo to back him up.

We have the best goalie, as voted by the GM's, and we now have one of the highest touted young goalie talents backing him up.

We have a young but proven squad of forwards, and two potential 90 point centermen in Savard and Krejci.

They don't even need role players cuz they have the best of that too. Need a scrapper? Who do you want over Looch and Thorton? Need a sniper? Kessel and Ryder are scary dudes with the puck.

Besides, they could put a blindfold on and throw darts for Baby B's to come up with all the talent down their too. Don't forget how good this team has been put together.

Oh, and the best coach in the league? I'll say this... the only teams who need to make a splash during free agency are the teams who couldn't compete. Not the teams that dominated even good teams.

It says on the B's website that the B's signed Fata and Dany Sabourin. Why would they sign Sabourin with Tukka coming up? Unless they are going to keep Tukka down in the AHL.

Could the bruins be packaging Kessel, Hunwick and Rask in a black buster trade???????????

7:31 PM
Anonymous BosBrn77 said...

Because they signed Sabourin and Fata? Both players will spend most of the season in Providence. Out of the two, Sabourin has the better chance of playing in the NHL in case Rask is not ready or if Thomas or Rask go down. Sabourin was released by Edmonton after the trade from Pittsburg, so he is NOT signed to replace Rask in Boston..... maybe Providence.

Rask is the future goalie for the Bruins, no way he goes. And Hunwick filed for arbitration, so he will be back. If any of the three are traded, it will be Kessel, but even then, look for Sturm or Kobasew to go first.

Two depth signings... which can be covered under the cap since they will be in Providence.

I think Rasks cap hit is over 3 million once you inlcude his bonus. Unless they plan on going with more of a split between Thomas and Rask it doesn't make sense to pay to pay a backup that kind of money. Thomas gets 50ish and Rask gets 30ish? If they plan on riding Thomas a bit more I wouldn't be surprised to see Rask start out in Providence and Sabourin act as the backup. It would create some cap space.

is fata forward or defense? either way he can throw em huh...

9:18 PM
Anonymous bruinsfanupnorth said...

Rask wont hit his bonuses, the bruins control that by the number of games he plays, his hit if i am not mistaken will be 850 K.

9:18 PM
Blogger Pekese said...

Fata is a defenseman. Big tough guy, probably here to replace Reich as a tough veteran. He'll add leadership to Providence. Rask's bonuses do not count against the cap. Cap bonuses are "soft" this upcoming season (unlike last season). Therefore, his cap hit is only $850k. Sabourin is a veteran who is seen as a depth signing incase of an emergency. The Bruins had no other goaltender in Providence with NHL experience, so signing Sabourin is a good decision.

Trade Kessel. Just do it. The B's need some cap space for next season. I know it sounds crazy to talk about next year, but if the B's find themselves in a situation where they have trouble re-signing Lucic I'm going to shit a brick.

offensive d-man the b's may want to look into, anton babchuk. he was 5h in nhl for d-men w/ 16 goals. trade kobasew or sturm for rights to babchuk. babchuk is a RFA and according to ESPN.com "I told his agent that if he finds a team that is interested enough that I'd be willing to move him," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford told ESPN.com on Wednesday. jus an idea. he is only 26, so he is young as well
