Next year cap commitments
Just a quick look at the cap situation and the players the Bruins have under contract for next season.
Forwards (10) $25.375 million
Marc Savard - 5.0
Patrice Bergeron - 4.750
Michael Ryder - 4.0
Marco Sturm - 3.5
Blake Wheeler - 2.825
Chuck Kobasew - 2.333
Petteri Nokelainen - 0.850
Milan Lucic - 0.850
Vladamir Sobotka - 0.750
Shawn Thornton - 0.517
Defensemen (5) $16.575
Zdeno Chara - 7.5
Dennis Wideman - 3.875
Aaron Ward - 2.5
Andrew Ference - 1.4
Mark Stuart - 1.30
Goaltenders (1) $3.2 million
Tuuka Rask - 3,200
Total - 10 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goaltender = $45.15 million
The Bruins would need to sign a minimum of 2 forwards, 1 defenseman, and 1 goaltender. If the salary cap is around 56 million that would leave about 11 million to hopefully sign Kessel, Krejci, and Thomas.
Here is a look at the current free agents on this team.
UFA and RFA Forwards (4)
P.J. Axelsson (UFA)
David Krejci (RFA)
Phil Kessel (RFA)
Stephane Yelle (UFA)
Notes-St. Pierre, Bitz, and Karsums are also all RFA.
UFA and RFA Defensemen (3)
Matt Hunwick (RFA)
Shane Hnidy (UFA)
Matt Lashoff (RFA)
Notes- Boychuk is a RFA.
UFA and RFA Goaltenders (2)
Manny Fernandez (UFA)
Tim Thomas (UFA)
The Bruins will focus on getting long term deals for both Krejci and Kessel. Both are due for huge raises, Krejci maybe more so then Kessel just because Krejci will put up incredible numbers by the time this season is over. Tim Thomas has emerged as a great goaltender but will 3-4 million for 2 years be enough? My prediction is that the Bruins will move a defenseman and a forward to free up enough cap space to sign all three players. Sturm or Kobasew seem likely candidates from the forwards. Stuart, Ference, and Ward are the likely candidates on defense. If the Bruins move Kobasew, they can shift Wheeler back to the right wing and then have either Soderberg, Sobotka, or Marchand(on a younger player with a cap friendly number) play as the left wing on the 3rd or 4th line. I think the Bruins will attempt to resign Yelle at a similar price tag, or a similar veteran who will not command more than a million. On defense, Hunwick will be back at a higher price tag(1.5 million?), so the Bruins may elect to deal either Ference or Stuart to offset Hunwick's figure. Aaron Ward's contract looks bad now especially with his durability issues. They will then try and bring in a cheap veteran (similar to Hnidy, if they do not resign him) to be the team's 6 defensemen.
Manny Fernandez and P.J. Axelsson are likely gone next season. This team will look very similar next season with the exception of probably one player at both goaltender and defense and two on offense.

Yikes....that leaves little to no room to improve this team. I wonder if/when Chara's deal is up if he'll resign for less money or go somewhere else? Savard looks like a goner after next season.
savard is not a goner...he already said he wants to retire a bruin...and why would you leave a team and system that has turned around your career...ur plus minus...points....he would be stupid to leave
Of course he said that...but did he say that he would take less money than what he's valued at? No, the B's will have to trade someone if they're going to fit him under the cap.
we also dont know wat the cap is gonna be like. ward is done the same year and so is murrays buyout. Its not much considering kessel and krecji need to be signed this year and wheeler and lucic are RFA. I might have heard wrong but wasnt there something in the cba that next year the bonus's wont be part of the cap for example wheelers cap hit is 2.8 or so but his base salary is 875,000 so that would be next years cap hit?
ur thinkin of the wrong year dipshit. thats two years away
Won't most team be in the same boat or even worse? If some of these players want to play they are going to have to take a pay cut.
Isn't the cap to be around the same as it is now and then the year after drop?
I haven't really kept up with the cap stuff, I should have but never did.
vince_m
alot of players will be taking a paycut. I think more players will be going over to KHL or whatever it is to play. As far as savard goes i think he will stay for about 6.5 at the most. We are deep at center i wouldnt mind seeing maybe hamill or colbourne and a draft pick being traded for a defenceman at the deadline. Hopefully they do what they have to to keep most of these guys.
trade lashoff
Lashoff is a goner, Savard will take a contract that works for the Bruins. He isnt going to leave the team that finally put their faith and chips on him. He loves playing here.
Montreal sucks.
Bruins will win the Cup.
There is no doubt if this team goes far this year most players would gladly reduce salary to play in Boston. They have created the same atmosphere as the Pats and Sox. Players would be lined up to get the opertunity to wear the black and gold.
The Vinny rumours are heating up - Sounds like the bruins are in the hunt - We are strong at center but how could you not inquire - He would do well as a bruin but I would not give up Krecji - Wheeler - Lucic - anyone else I would not have a problem with -
axelsson and ken hodge jr. for lecavalier
No Thanks - you're going to have to give up a Kessel, Krecji, Lucic or Wheeler (a combination of 1 or 2 of these guys, and picks) to get Vinny - why would you want to do that? Also, you're on the hook for $8M+ for the next 11 years...No thanks...I'd rather have balance than a big name like that...unless it's Joey T...who I would trade everyone on the B's for....Love you Joey....
The only reason I'd be excited to see Vinny Lecavalier traded to Boston, is to see the look on all those asshole Canadiens fan's faces when they see the guy they'd love to have wearing the B on his chest.
I kind of wish the Bruins could have grabbed Brendan Shanahan for the second half of the year. But either way. They're fine.
I thought that the Vinny to Boston rumors were just some asshole making them up, but I saw earlier today that the B's are in fact "in the mix" for Vinny. I believe it was 2 first round picks and Kessel or Krecji or 1 1st round pick, a top prospect and Kessel or Krecji....I think this deal sucks...and wouldn't in any way want to have to pay Vinny for 11 years
Beating the Islanders 2-1 tonight. Kinda worried about our offense lately. We have trouble scoring against one of the worst teams inthe league. Not sure what can be done. We are fine on defense but not too sure about offense.
vince_m
Well...were missing 2/3rds of our "first" line, and were missing 2/3rds of our "second" line. Fortunately our "third" line is playing better than our "first" line.
What can be done, is we keep playing hard, and wait for our players to return before the playoffs.
Thats all that needs to be done, and I am completely sure about our offense; when we have Kessel, Lucic and Bergeron back in the mix we are one of the best scoring teams in the league. Not much too fix or worry about there.
I agree Jefe77 - there is not too much to fix or worry about right now.
That being said, I think the offense still has to play better than they did against NYI. Perhaps it was a Hab hangover kind of thing. In any event, last night's offensive performance was piss poor. It needs to be ratcheted up if we are to compete with the Caps tomorrow.
Agreed, they really need to keep it simple if they are depleted and rifle it then crash the net.
Anyone check eklund lately!?!?! he's such a moron.
The only Bruins on his trade rumour chart is PJ Axelsson. Seriously speaking, what do you think we can get for PJ? Depending on the team, I think it can be as good as a 2nd rounder...not kidding. Think about it, wouldn't PJ fit-in on Detroit's roster? I've been saying this all along. Since the B's have been using him as more than a defensive forward...maybe it's time for an upgrade.
AND i know you guys hate him, but teams will have interest and he will be traded before he is lost to free agency...
Where are the posts??!!!???
Pekese you suck as bad as Matt!!!
Bring back latrappe!!!! At least he posted!!!
matts been missing for over a month and a half. pekese has been posting alot lately but there should be someone else to help out.
Mook - how about u posting? Check it out. You certainly are a true fan and most of comments are based on fact and logic - a nice change for this site.
I like how you said "most" comments...!!!
Sure I'll post but I live in Toronto and don't have access to watch all the games...but I can post about the ones I catch.
BUT what is happening with Glen Murray?!?! That's worth considering because it means we'll have some space to pick-up a disgruntled RW from somewhere...
I was wondering how long it would take before Murray's name came up again - it is like he fell off the face of the earth. I am sure he is waiting outside of PC's office for the call. If some of the injured do not return soon I think it is time to try out some new bodies from the P bruins - Noke , SOB , Bitz and the little guy with the big stick are not getting it done.
Also for the first time I will join the bandwagon and ask what the frig is Axe doing on the PP. His give away at the end of the last game was brutal - I think he has a place and will be needed for the playoffs but for the love of god please get him off the PP
Agreed.
It worked last year...
Call-up Reich and Schaefer. If Shchaefer lights-it-up, we could try trading him since he's on the cheap. Reich can throw the fists and a pansy-team would snap him up. Leafs would love both these guys...maybe they'd go for it (or at least snag Schaeffer on re-entry and get him off our books for good).
Karsums is leading Providence, but rarely gets a shot.
Yeah, I for one am also puzzled with Julien's usage of Axelsson, especially late in the last game. This is the third season in a row it has not worked. In all honestly, since the Bruins want a lefthanded veteran out there on the powerplay, why not try Yelle over Axelsson. I have no confidence in anything PJ does offensively. At least Yelle has scored more than once on a goaltender this season. To go even further why not just scratch that old setup and try something new because the personal does not fit. Would trying Chara up front hurt?
As to the site, I have no idea where the other bloggers have been the past 2 months (Matt) or year (the rest of them). Another writer would help.
I had heard something about Manny to Colorado for Lilies. Don't know if this is true or close. If anyone has any ideas or heard anything that would be great.
I had also heard something about Spezza possibly coming here. Anything to that?
vince m
Spezz sucks. Too soft and salary is large. I'd take Heatley though!
Heatley back with Savard...deadly.
I would love to have Heatley instead but I have heard that they are looking into Spezza. How about the Keith Upchuck rumor? I spent years while the Jets were here watching him be an ass off the ice and useless on. I would not want him on the B's.
