Time to make a move: Jay Bouwmeester

With Andrew Ference out for 6-8 weeks, it is time for Chiarelli to make a move.  It isn't like this is Shane Hnidy going down, as well as he has played, but Ference has been one of the best defenseman all season.  I like Matt Hunwick, but right now, I don't see him filling in for 6-8 weeks when he is paired with Shane Hnidy.  Matt Lashoff is an option, but still, do you want a rookie?

Florida is still struggling and it doesn't seem like they are going anywhere.  Boston has a lot of assets to trade, so why not make a move for Jay Bouwmeester?  He is the best defenseman available (Philaldephia just acquired Phillipe Boucher from Dallas from Daryl Sydor, Boucher could have helped) and he could make the Bruins a legit contender.  I know a lot of people don't want to trade a lot for him, either do I, but if you can also lock him up in a deal similar to Chara or something, you would have nothing to do this offseason aside from maybe a trade or two.  The cap room is there.  Now the question is, what do you trade.  Jay-Bo is a UFA after the season, so if there isn't a sign and trade, it take a high pick, an NHL ready prospect/lower roster player, and another prospect.  If it IS a sign and trade, maybe a 1st, Kobasew and another prospect.  Who knows.  It is Florida, maybe they take Hunwick straight up.

It just seems like a perfect time to make a big move to take this team one step further.  At the same time I am not down for trading Bergeron or someone, but if we can get a guy like Jay-Bo for something fair, do it.

I think the B's have already proven that they are a legit contender with Ferrence. Moreover the rest of the league is starting to take notice of our untapped potential. With the addition of J-Bo, the other 29 teams would shudder and be in shock & awe of us.

As good as J-Bo would be in a B's uniform, we may be just be renting him as he is a ufa at year end. Do we really want to mortgage our future for right now? I think not - anyway where is the cap space Matt even if the B's consider acquiring him?

Fernandez, Thomas, Axelsson, possibly Murray, Hnidy

Ok I see where you are coming from. Fernandez & Thomas' contracts are up at year end & the B's cannot afford to keep both. As much as I am not a Thomas fan, I think the B's brass would be run out of town if they decide to keep Fernandez & let Thomas go.

I would not let Axelsson go however. I seem to be the only person blogging that truly appreciates what he brings to the B's. Check the record - when he plays the B's have a better winning percentage compared to when he doesn't.

Although it pains me greatly I would trade Fernandez and Ryder for J-Bo - providing that J-Bo signs with the B's. Fernandez & Voukoun would work well together & Ryder has gone south anyway so he may as well play in Florida.

i dont think we give up on ryder so quickly. If this guy wasnt skating and working hard i might think that. hes close to putting a few into the net, just be patient. as for salary cap, lets wait and see what happens iwth the murray situation. we may have enough space murray goes on the long range injured list.

ok really get off the bouwmeester bandwagon hes been crap this season he would cost too much in terms of personnel to obtain and too much money for a highly overrated defenseman...theres gotta be better options out there so just stop drinking the bouwmeester koolaid there matt hes a piece of shit

Just remember what kind of deal Phoenix threw out there to get Jokinen. You'd be looking at someone young and talented for sure.

I think it is time to move this team to the next level - we have players that are expendable and which are needed by other teams.
Pull the trigger on a deal now before the prices get rediculous around the trading deadline. This team is good but still missing one or two players which could make them a serious cup contender.
Teams like Florida - Ottawa - Tampa - Nashville are struggling and I would think are close to seriously shaking up thier teams.

I take back Nashville - I meant Atlanta

Guys way back july i was the 1st to post that the Bruins should go after Yelle....here is another idea worth taking into consideration...Bowmeester is from Edmonton and is a UFA this coming offseason..you know the money the oilers are throwing around now will surely land a hometown boy! Manny Fernandez has played very well and now is the time to move him...i would like to see him land in Colorado along with a young dman perhaps like Hunwick for Liles...poor Raycroft can't get a break and i think very soon the Av's will get impatient with Budaj.Rask is ready to back up Thomas, and to have another puck moving dman of Liles' caliber would really go along away, i would like to see a deal like this happening soon before Fernandez gets hurt or begins to play poorly.

I know this is a big what if. But what if Chiarelli did not sign Ryder and instead used Nokie and Sobotka in his spot all season. Then this up coming offseason with PJ and Manny off the books we made a run at Hossa?

3:17 PM

We already took at run at Hossa and he didnt want to come here.Thats why we signed Ryder.

just got tickets to the game tonight. bruins should smash the leafs! i bet there will be no fights, since the leafs have no fighters (heavyweights, middleweights). maybe a lightweight tilt like kobasew or someone...

Although as B's fans we all like to speculate and play GM, the truth of the matter is that PC is going to ride out the Ferrence injury.

I agree with this approach and I sincerely believe that in the long run it will make us a better team. Just look at last year when we had to contend with all the injuries.

The way way that PC will stray from this strategy is if the B's slide too far and too soon for comfort.

Fernandez & Thomas are going nowhere this year. Both are needed & required in case one or the other is injured. Tuuka is close but I believe one more year in the minors would benefit him & the B's greatly.

GO BRUINS!! CRUSH THE LEAFS TONIGHT & GET BACK ON TRACK. DO NOT PLAY TO THEIR LEVEL OF INCOMPETENCE & FRUSTRATION.

has anyone heard if anything is happening on the Murray front. Is he going on Injured List or is he still bought out?

Since I can't usually watch the Bruin game I listen to them, but tonight my son had a game and had to miss this one. I know we won but, how did we play? Good to see Ryder finally got another goal, also good to see Kessel get back on the score sheet.

i will probably be the only one who says this, but i think the bruins need a SOLID stay-at-home defenseman...not a "puck-moving" defenseman. wideman does that job fairly well, and chara can move it pretty good himself. we have ward, start and hnidy back there, but each have their moments of lapse which result in goals (last night, hunwick bailed on hagman which resulted in a goal, and stuart was at fault for the first one...imo.).

BUT if ward and hnidy step-up and start playing grittier more reliable hockey at the back-end, we should be fine. personally i dont see any problems with the current line-up...except reliability at the D and the shootout sucks large nuts.

PC has made it clear that they will search within the system for a temporary replacement for Ferrence.

With Hunwick playing simple and responsible, and scoring a goal,...you can kiss trade rumors goodbye.

Also, when your team is second in the conference only 18 games in, you dont bust a team changing trade when you have the leeway to test your depth like the Bruins do.

If the Bruins lose 4 out of 5 of thier next games, then PC might do something.

I dont see them going on any losing streak of any sort. Even if they play over .500 hockey until Ferrence gets back, it will be worth it.

I also beleive PC will ride this roster at least to the trade deadline, and look for him to be a buyer for someone not so huge on the trade wire.

I was reading a post from a couple of days ago the one on Savard... Although the source from which this article came from is not legit. A trade may make some sense...
If you trade him to a young team that needs leadership and get a 1st and some more then it might be well worth it. Granted everyone will bring up he is our best offensive player, yes he is but Jumbo Joe was our best offensive player back then and he got traded. I am not going to say that Savard is or is not going to get traded but I won't sit here and just tell people that he will not get traded because he is our most valuable asset. Which is not true. He is up there in age and if a team offered me a first in 2010 I would jump at it if the team was in the top 10 or 5 or so. SO why not get younger.

Next topic, the defense if I were the B's I would target Shea Weber from Nashville, he is only 23 and probably will cost less than J-Bo. Not saying J-Bo is not great... But there is equal talent for less and i think the B's should save some of there assets.

When I talk about saving assets I am talking about younger players. Like KEssel and Krejci.

Let's get Nylander back! Washington has him avaiable, so why not! He always puts up good numbers and is not a clubhouse distraction.

Shea Weber is due for a huge pay increase. He leads the NHL in defensive scoring.

Getting rid of Savard makes no sense at all. This team is full of youth, and Savard is the kind of player in his prime that makes teams good; The Bruins.

So, getting rid of Savard to me, is going in the complete opposite direction of PC has been doing.

PC has been warding away all the bad mouth talk that the players have held against the Bruins for so long.

UFA's would NEVER sign here, because everyone knew the Bruins were full of shit when they told you what they were doing, why you should sign there, and what kind of faith they put in you to be part of a building team.

Trading Savard would RAPE the faith of the NHL in the Bruins, it would destroy our first line, it would make the Joe Thornton trade that much more of a blow to the franchise.

You dont come up on a player with heart, talent, grit (speed for the new NHL) and passion like Marc Savard. He's got more in most those catergories than Joe T.

Anonymous...we dont need ANOTHER center.

Nylander would be put where? On the fourth line? Isnt that why we pay Yelle such a small fee?

What do you suggest? Putting Bergeron on the fourth line, trading Krecji or Savard?

Just honestly wondering what you have in mind...because it doesnt seem to make any sense whatsover.

I'm glad P.C. isn't as trigger happy as some of the fans on this site. It's still only November, why are people talking about trading away our top scorer in Savard? I don't think this team needs a J-Bo right now, especially not overpaying for him. I think Hunwick is going to step up to the challenge with Ference going down. I think that people need to give him a chance, and I think that P.C. and Julien are willing to give him that chance thankfully. He has played well so far and I think that you will see improvement from him in the defensive zone. He was captain of his Michigan squad afterall, he's not a scrub.

As much as I would like to see a big-name come to Boston, I think right now could be a bad time. I know Ference is gone for a time, but the team is clicking. You don't want to disrupt a good thing. And for the life of me don't trade away Savard or Kessel. We have a core of players finally that we can build around, you don't mess with that.

for me i don't have any doubt about who will be out of this team.. fernandez out ... let's give another chance for tukka rask ... with this space in cap we can choice one good defenseman,
but I have to admit is a tough decision and have a big risk because rask is very young and i don't know he will can handle with the responsibility

Why is everyone so hard up for a trade. We rebuilt the team year after year to no avail. PC came around and didn't want to screw up chemistry and let them grow as a team and it seems to be working well.

boychuck st pierre shaefer for Weber or Jbo thats reasonable st pierre will never play with the b's because we have sobotoka noke and hamill on list b4 him. boychuk is a good young player who leads AHL in d scoring but we have hunwick lashoff and bodnarchuck still available as young d men so why not trade boychuck st pierre and shaefer? doesnt do anything to our dept as we keep Noke and Sobotka for fowards and hunwick/hnidy and lashoff

I kind of am torn in two ways - I think this is the best team in years. Tons of talent and youth. I would have a problem trading away any of the current roster but I know this team is a second rounder at best with the current players.
Hate to see someone go but they are one defenceman and one sniper away from a cup.

I love it when people throw around names for trades and include superstar players who have more than one year left on their contract. Cause teams are going to be willing to take 3 bruins "crap" players for a superstar with 2-5 years on their contract right?

Trade: Axelsson, Boychuk, Reich, Sobotka, Nokelinean for Ovechkin and Semin.

i would trade nokie, sobotka, lashoff, and 3rd round pick for j .boum , the bruins would get mor playoff experience with j bo and lashoff is injured and we need more defense then offense right now and even j bo can put the pouck in the net wiith him the bruins will win the cup this year !!!!!!!
