Chiarelli: I am not trading Kessel

Could the asking price of Marian Hossa be less than what we thought? Possibly.

From today's globe...

TAMPA -- Although he's still hunting for a top-six forward prior to Tuesday's 3 p.m. deadline, GM Peter Chiarelli said Phil Kessel would not be part of any package.

"I really don't entertain trading him," said Chiarelli. "You've got to be patient with these players."

With the asking price for Marian Hossa being a young NHLer, a prospect, and a first-round pick, Kessel could be the first component of a trade for the Atlanta winger. However, Chiarelli made it sound like he'll hold on to the 20-year-old, although he acknowledged he has listened to offers for every player on his roster, including Kessel.

Chiarelli denied a Toronto Sun report that had Kessel going to Philadelphia for forward Jeff Carter.

Matt's Take: While it could be true he won't deal Kessel, this could be a bluff. I never believed the Kessel for Carter offer. Carter isn't as good as Kessel. It may be that the Thrashers don't want offense, but more defense. Lashoff, Alberts, Stuart, MacQuaid, and others could be used instead of Kessel. There is also rumors of Rask and a 1st for Hossa with an extension.

I say we go for Hossa if we can get him (signed) giving up some youth to do so. We have about a 3 to 4 year window to win this cup once Bergies, Savards, Charas,Mannys, our core grps contracts our up we will not be able to sign them all again. The cap will go up again this year but that is only because of the Canadian dollar being so strong where the 6 Canadian teams will be bringing 40% of NHL revenues, the Canadian dollar will go down along with cap. Lets take a chance and go for it in this small window we have here.

As long as Kessel, rask and Lucic are NOT part of any package I agree.
