Marian Hossa: Go big or go home

Let me get into this Marian Hossa thing some more with you all.

As many people have noted, the Bruins are one of the best defensive teams in the East. Whether it be from a skill point or style of play, that is debatable. With that being said, many people don't see the Bruins going after a defenseman. I agree with that, except for J-M Liles out of Colorado or Ryan Suter from Nashville. Suter would cost a lot, so I don't really see him as a fit. Liles on the other hand, all signs point to him being with a new team and Colorado wants big, physical defenseman. I would try to package Alberts and a pick or low prospect for Liles.

The Bruins aren't going to win a cup this season unless something spectactular happens. Because of that, it would be foolish to send the house to Atlanta for Hossa and have him walk and get nothing. There are rumors out that the Bruins are one of the leading teams for Hossa, and Hossa has said he wants to play here. Hossa is an ex-linemate of Marc Savard and ex-teammated of Zdeno Chara. The rumored deal is a combination of Phil Kessel, a 1st round pick, and a prospect. Which is a fair return for Hossa. Many insiders have said that the Bruins will walk from the deal if Hossa is not signed to an extension.

What numbers are we looking at for Hossa? He is making 6 million this season, so if you can get to him before July 1st, you are probably looking at 7.2-7.6 per season. If you wait, and teams get into bidding wars, you could get up to 7.9-8.5 per. My guess? Hossa is 29, so a 6 year deal with numbers going 10, 10, 7, 6, 6, 6. Or, 6 years 45 million. 7.5 per.

While either like Kessel or think he is a bust, I think he will be a 30-30 guy someday. I don't think we will see him as a 100 point guy or a 50 goal scorer. Kessel lacks ideal size, but is highly skilled. Remember he is only 20 years old. The thing is, the rookie season it is hard to tell with guys, but in the 2nd season, you can tell if they will be good. Could Kessel be like Joe and be dormant for a few years? Possibly, but unlikely. Another thing is forwards usually don't peak until they are 26-28 years old. That being said, I'd drive Kessel to the airport for Hossa.

Even if Hossa is not acquired, he could be signed in the offseason for the reasons mentioned above.

My predicted deal if it occurs...

to Boston: Marian Hossa, 3rd round pick
to Atlanta: Phil Kessel, 2009 1st round pick, Adam McQuaid

Man, isn't it fun on deadline day when your not a seller?

I think it would have to be an 08 1st rounder and a higher ranked defensive prospect. Get Reechi as well and give Atlanta Murray.

I like the idea of getting Hossa, but not for Kessel. Kessel is only 20... And was a top 5 pick. I don't agree with the assessment that if a player doesn't put up monster numbers, he will never do so. Remember he battled Cancer. He is a good player. Patrick Elias' first 2 years in the NHL he didn't crack 20 goals and Dany Heatley scored 26 in his first NHL season when he was 21. Kessel is projected to score 21 goals, Hossa scored 15 his sophomore year. Jerome Iginla scored 15 his second year and 20 the first but he still became a great scorer. I listed the first couple of guys because I thought Kessel was LW but ESPN has him down as a RW. So either way there are great players in the NHL today that have had rough begins and still became all-stars.

I agree though the Bruins need a Scorer and his name is Hossa. I would look at Stoll, Tanguay, Michael Cammalleri(LW according to ESPN) in addition to Hossa. 1 or 2 of these guys. Try to get a winger and a center to sure up those first 2 lines. Cammalleri and Stoll won't cost an arm and a leg, and depending on what you have left look for a good solid Defender.

Maybe....

Sturm for Tanguay or Cammalleri

A Prospect and pick for Stoll

Get Liles or some good defender and give up some prospects.

Keep Sturm. He is a bargain and fits in with this system.

You can have Hoss, but jesus, we don't want Kessel. We dont' need another guy who couldn't finish a Milky Way, and who needs to be babied along into developing. Give us a quality d-man or five, and you've got a deal.

See Sturm is a good player but the 2 I mentioned are top line forwards. Well Tanguay is at least not so much Cammalleri. Sturm a 20-25 goal a year guy. Tanguay is one of those superior talents with Playoff experience. Stoll is an upgrade over Krejic right now and could anchor that second line with Kobasew and Kessel.

For Hossa, I would give Murray, A prospect or 2 (not Rask or Zamill) and a 1st in 2008.

I understand the comments made of Tanguay might lead to some ripping but Tanguay with a stud Center men in Savard and a great winger like Hossa would fit in well. He is not a sniper but more of a another setup man. With that said he can still score. I remember a nice goal he scored when he was in Colorado he went glove side right between the post and goaltender not to mention his position. He was going baseline.

Don't forget Hossa played with Ference in Portland for junior hockey as well.

Thank god beantown isnt the GM. firstly, you think atlanta would take MURRAY and a non rask prospect......FOOOOL. secondly the LAST thing we need is more centers. have you completely written off bergeron. We have three top line capable centers. you have brain damage

they should get hossa becasue if they do they do he would be on a line wiht marc savard patrice bergerone and then on defense it would be chara and denis wideman that would imporve our chances of goin farther into the playoffs then we did in the previous season and kessel isnt porduceing like we thought he would so that would be a good trade he is owurth it
