Stuart and Primeau Traded to Calgary

Peter Chiarelli announced that the team has traded Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart to the Calgary Flames for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew.

Kobasew is an up and coming player,. only 24, who had 20 goals last season and will add a lot of offense to the team.

Ference is a good defenseman, top 4, and is under contract for 4 more years.

This was a good trade by the Bruins, getting rid of captain hook Primeau and getting some top talent back. The Bruins gained some cap space and could make another move to improve the team.

More details later...

kobasew is a improvement from primeau, and ference is under contract for three years I do not see how people think Calgary won the deal

this trade doesnt help the team. getting rid of Primeau doesnt make losing Stuart worth it. could have gotten more for Stuart by himself. Ference had one decent year, fluke! Kobasew no more than third line winger. You thought Primeau took bad penalties, wait til you see these guys play. PC Sucks!!!

Not so sure about this trade. It is awesome to finally get rid of the Captain, Wayne Primeau. Lewis is probably crying his eyes out. However, I do not think Ference or Kobasew are great themselves. Ference is a small defenseman who does have some grit to him, but probably a 4th or 5th defenseman in the league. Kobasew is a winger, who like many other wingers on this team (chistov, tenkrat, mowers, donovan, axelsson) is not a top winger in this league. His potential could be good but right now hes a fourth liner. Stuart was gone either way so this trade makes some sense. Overall, even if these guys suck I wouldn't ever care, Stuart was a goner anyways and I am just so happy to see Primeau gone.

Kobasew is currently injured and will not be able to play for at least two weeks.

Overall, I like this trade. Granted, I would have rather seen Stuart locked up and in a Bruins uniform for 4-5 years. But to be honest, that can still happen. Look at Recchi, Reasoner, and Weight from last year. They all re-signed with the teams that traded them. So there is a chance, although slim, that Brad could come back.
But there are a few reasons why I like this deal. The biggest reason is that both are UFAs and we could have lost both for nothing. Next is the fact that this deal just got the team younger. Ference and Stuart are both 27, but Primeau is 30 while Kobasew is only 24. Also, this just freed up a lot of money under the cap! PC just gave the team 1.6 in cap room. That could help in the long run.
Now, pekese, I do agree with the talent assesment when it comes to Stuart over Ference. TSN ranks Stuart as a top 4 d-man, while Ference is only a top 6. As for Primeau, the Zamboni driver is an upgrade on him. As for Kobasew being a top winger, granted he is only ranked a top 6, but he has one thing that all but Chistov doesn't have in the players you listed. YOUTH! He is only 24. If Lewis will give him some time, he could provide a spark that the team needs. I say, lets give PC a chance. Look what he did by stealing Bochenski from Chicago!
Another thing to think about with this deal. This will give Lashoff, M. Stuart, and Sigalet a chance to come up and stay.
I personally would have liked to seen the same players (and the conditional pick) go to the Ducks for Bryzgalov and Rome, but PC has shown he knows what he is doing. Lets just hope that Lewis smartens up and puts the lines where the players can excell.
Kessel-Savard-Murray
Sturm-Bergeron-Chistov
Bochenski-Boyes-Tenkrat
Axelsson-Mowers-Donovan

You can put Kobasew in place of Tenkrat when he he is ready to play.

Alberts-Chara
Allen-York
Ference-Mara

In reality, we would all rather see Lashoff or M. Stuart come up and play over York, but we know how Lewis likes the Geritol guys over the youngsters.

Sorry for such a long rant. I just think this could become a decent trade in the long run.

I think this trade is a fair one. The B's gave uo two UFA and received youth and player under contracts for the next couple of years. Getting ride of Primeau as an excellent move and it will open a spot for a young promising non-hooking forward.

Stuart wasn't playing good for the B's. Since Christmas, Stuart killed the team more then it helped. To get two NHL players for two inpending UFA is a decent value.

latrappe I totally agree with you. I feel dirty saying that but it is true. I can't see how we could have gotten any more than we did, in fact I am surprised we got this much!

Amazing trade PC.
