More on Flames-Bruins Deal

As first reported here...

to Boston:

Chuck Kobasew
Andrew Ference

to Calgary:
Brad Stuart
Wayne Primeau
2008 4th round pick (if Stuart does not resign this summer)

Props to Chiarelli on this one. He got a real stud in Kobasew, and a solid defenseman for cheap money in Ference. Ference is a top 4 defenseman who will fit well in the lineup. The real piece to the deal is Kobasew, who had 20 goals last season as a rookie, and is only 24 years old.

The Bruins are the clear winners in this deal. Stuart will be missed, but he was a gonner anyways, and Primeau can easily be replaced for less than his 1.1 cap hit.

The weird thing is, I was just going to make a post today on how Stuart will likely be dealt to somewhere we'd never expect.

Contract Obligations:

Player_____________Cap Hit_______06-07_____07-08_____08-09______09-10
Andrew Ference**------750,000----750,000--1,235,000--1,340,000--1,625,000
Chuck Kobasew-------1,200,000--1,200,000--1,200,000*

Brad Stuart---------2,150,000----2,400,000
Wayne Primeau-------1,125,000----1,150,000

*Kobasew is a RFA after his deal ends.
**Ference signed a 3 yr extension with a 1.4 cap hit in all 3 years.

Bruins save 1,325,000 in cap space.

Lines:

Sturm Bergeron Kobasew
Kessel Savard Murray
Axelsson Boyes Bochenski
Chistov Mowers Donovan
Reich

Chara Alberts
Ference Allen
Mara York

The JT deal...

The Joe Thornton trade looks like this.

Joe Thornton and a 4th round pick for Marco Sturm, Andrew Ference, and
Chuck Kobasew.

Ference isnt a top four D-man on worst team in league or the IceDogs for that matter! The Thornton trade just gets worse and worse, Now we are giving up a first rounder. This trade is awful! PC Stinks!!! Once again Managment does nothing to keep players that will help team that might cost a little money. cant believe we pay to see this so called team.

In the context of the JT deal, yes it sucks...but on the context of a Primeau Stuart deal, it is good.

You are right, the Thornton deal does look worse. BUT!!! Can you imagine how bad it would have looked at the end of the season if we didn't make this trade, or worse, any trade?!
Give Ference a chance. He is rated as a top six d-man. And at his pay, it looks pretty reasonable. He likes the physical game, and could be the stay at home type of guy we need. He is only 27 and was quoted as saying that he heard his name in rumors, and it bothered him, but to be coming to a storied franchise makes it so much easier.
PC does not stink. He sent Versteeg and a pick to get Bochenski. Look at what Bochenski has already added to the team, and try and imagine what Versteeg would have brought! Exactly... nothing! PC knows what he is doing. He has a plan, and is following it very well. Getting younger, hard-nosed players that are willing to get dirty, while not playing stupid.
This gives the team salary cap room for a UFA or two. And who knows, one of them could be Brad Stuart. We have a young team, and PC is making it stronger. I'll take a 24 yo Kobasew over Primeau anyday. And this will give players like Lashoff and M. Stuart a chance to come up and not fade away in the minors.
All in all... this was a good move. Better then "trying" to make a run at the playoffs and not making it, and then losing both to free agency. I honestly hope we miss the playoffs, then we can get another high pick. Look at what the Penguins have done. It takes time to build a team the right way. They lost a few seasons, and now they have two of the best players in the league, for years to come. Not to mention the other guys that are well above average.
Give PC a chance.... this isn't over yet.

I agree bosbrn77, they got Kessel and Bergeron, don't forget Savard. Murray is no slouch, and Boyes can always rebound. Chara anchors the blueline, Alberts, Lashoff, Stuart and Allen are all up and coming and is Kobasew works out, even better. The only flaw in the deal is the pick, but oh well. If we can snag Giguere this offseason, we have a great shot.

Matt,
This is what is in Bish's Blog today: One more thing on the trade:

There is a conditional draft pick involved. A 4th round pick in 2008 (the one that the Bruins received from the Caps when they traded Milan Jurcina to Washington) will go to Calgary IF they cannot re-sign Brad Stuart.

Good pick up Pekese, I was just about to post the same link. A 1st rounder is a bit steep considering neither Stuart or Kobasew have lived up to their expectations.

The JT was bad wen they announced it. Last night trade is a consequence of a trade who was botched by MOC; not the final result. PC got two players under contracts who might help the team. So i will wait a couple of weeks before becoming a trigger happy fan...

so now we need a stay at home d-man? It looks like the problem is we have too many stay at home players. You realize aside from charas 2 shots only 3 bruins had more than one shot last night. Bruins out shot 14-5 in second period. Stuart was great because he could mocve the puck, he moved up on the play. Kobasew isnt a first line winger either. Bochenski only trade that looks good so far for pc, but then again Tenkrat and Chistov scored in their first games and look what theyve done!

yea its a conditional draft pick (caps one we got for Jurcina)- not a 1st rounder

Yes, we need quality stay at home defensemen! How many offensive minded d-men do we need? If we have too many, you might as well call them forwards on the blueline. With Mara and Chara as the offesive minded blueliners, we are set. And no, i'm not saying Mara is great. But we have him under contract for another year, so that made Stuart more expendable then Mara.
I'd rather see Alberts play with Chara, and Allen play with Mara, then allow Ference and York, or God willing, Lashoff in place of York, as the two guys that play the more defensive style.
Not to mention this deal allows more cap room for free agents in the off season. Maybe we bring in Poti, Hamrlik, Skoula, Markov, Souray, Timonen, Rafalski, Phillips, Preissing, Salo, or bring back Brad Stuart.
Bottom line, this year is in the tank for the B's. I think PC is going to get ready to rebuild, the proper way. I'd rather have got Kobasew and Ference, then have lived in a pipe dream that we could make it to the playoffs, only to miss out and lose both Stuart and Primeau and get nothing at all.
As for Chistov not doing as well... look at the coach... not the player on this one. Maybe if Chistov got more playing time, and more skilled linemates then Mowers, he could possibly be putting up numbers equal or at least close to his potential. Tenkrat, is more of an energy forward that flies around the ice causing havoc. Let him do his job and disrupt play, and pot a few goals, and he is fine. I'll take Tenkrat and Chistov over Mowers, Primeau, or Donovan any day!
And I don't think any of us are saying that Kobasew is a first line winger! Second or third line, if he is played correctly, yes, but no where near a first liner. But funny thing about that is... Axelsson isn't a first liner either, but he is on the first line, while Kessel wastes away on the third or fourth lines night after night!
And I agree that Brad was great with the outlet passes. He was a good d-man all around. The trade rumors were effecting him more then anything, I feel! But the whole thing is, PC had to get something for him before he lost him for nothing. And considering Brad can sign anywhere next year, PC got more then what was realistically out there! True, most fans hoped for Bryzgalov (me included), or Smith and Bergeron for the Oilers. But you're not going to get that for a rental player..... or two!
PC is trying to clean up the mess that MOC left here. And so far... so good!
The biggest question mark for next year, is goaltending. Like Matt mentioned, if we can grab Giguere we would be ok. But there are a few goalies that could really work for us. Whether in a trade or through free agency.
PC has a good solid core, again like Matt said, to build with. His only problem is finding a coach to utilize the team to the best potential.
