Derek Morris to the Bruins?

According to James Murphy of NESN, the Bruins are close to signing defenseman Derek Morris. Morris is a righthanded defenseman who played for Phoenix last season before being traded to the New York Rangers at the trade deadline. More details to come....

UPDATE: TSN has confirmed that Derek Morris has signed with the Bruins. The deal is one year with a cap hit on $3.3 million. The Bruins now have $1,304,167 in cap space available. Another contract must be moved to fit Phil Kessel in without exceeding the cap. Moving Kobasew's contract alone will give the Bruins $3,637,500 which probably will not be enough to get Kessel signed. A player(Savard, Bergeron, Ryder?) with a larger salary may be headed out if the Bruins are serious about signing Kessel long-term.

i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it. this better be a one million dollar deal at most, and a one year deal.

wouldn't this guy be more like a replacement if they traded ference? not ward. all this does is make us extremely soft on the back end.

Ward brought a lot more to the table then just his play on the ice. I think this is a bigger loss than most people think. If in fact this move does allow us to sign Kessel it doesn't back the Bruins management talks in trying to get bigger and more physical. It also does not leave much room to sign another D-man. That being said their must be a defensman in Providence that they think they can rely on.

Lucic Savard Kessel = awesome
Sturm Bergeron Kobasew = awesome
Wheeler Krecji Ryder = awesome
Recchi Begin Thornton = hmmmm

Chara Ference
Stuart Wideman
Hunwick Boychuck - But where is the depth???????

3.3 million....wow...at least its 1 year? but now kessel looks to be gone. chia's moves dont always look good right away (remember wideman/boyes) but this one looks just plain bad right now

Someone else has to be getting traded, as much as I hate to say it my gut tells me Bergeron to dump salary.

the bruins will be fine, we have seven defensman on our nhl roster along with 14 forwards (dont forget about my boy bitzy!) and god knows providence is always prepared to send a litany of future nhlers up to take injured players places.

in chia we trust

I don't mind this deal at all. True, it eats up a lot of cap money, but at the same time, this either means that PC has an idea of what Kessel wants, maybe a 1 year deal around 3 mill meaning Kobasew is bubye, or it's because he has a trade in place for Kess.

Either way, no GM is stupid enough to make this move without a plan. Relax people, I'm on pins and needles, but lets not jump to conclusions.

So far PC has done a great job running the Bruins. He must have a master plan that he is working on. Things will be fine for next year. I am worried if they do ship Kessel out as there goes 30 goals that we need. We need the offense, but we also needed a puck moving Dman. I was hoping to get MA Bergeron. Not sure about Morris as I haven't really followed him, but PC must have seen something.

why is everyone crapping on derek morris?!?!?

he's a good defenseman! here's the situation:

with so many forwards coming-up for free agency next year, it means that signing kessel could lead to either savard or lucic leaving. let kessel walk for picks...with sturm back you wont even notice he's gone.

the problem now is noone wants him...so he'll be a holdout.

76 goals and 264 assists for 340 points with 794 penalty minutes in 793 games

these are very good numbers for a defenseman

Mook is right this is perfect trade off Ward is done his body is shutting down to slow doent move the puck well he was only here for leadership Not worth 2.5mil anymore. Morris is a perfect fit for our team maybe we overpaid him a little but come on guys this doent make us soft on D we are still going to be as good as last year and if we can get kessel signed will be better.

kessel cant hold out or he loses the entire season. he doesnt have arbitration rights either. he can either sign his qualifying offer which is 965,000 or sign a contract be it with the bruins or another team.

the bruins have over 2 million in buyouts. wow that money could have gone towards kessel

yeah 2 million plus for buyouts. schaeffer and murray come off the books after this season though ( i think) and eaves adds 41,000 to the cap next season. so that means we can keep the current players and throw that 2 million at lucic

Could the bruins be looking at a back loaded contract for kessel???

im thinking the bruins move ference and kobasew. moving ference makes them bigger on d by putting boychuk in. hell be the 6th and have limited minutes skating with stuart. would free up almost 3 million total.
