The Lastest on Zherdev

The latest on Nikolai Zherdev, Blue Jackets GM MacLean offered Zherdev a 1 year deal worth 1.25, a 2 year deal worth 3.9, and a 3 year deal worth 6.6 million, Zherdev and co. rejected it. Zherdev countered with 2/75 million for 1 year, 5.75 for 2 years, and 9 million for 3 years. The Jackets then counter offered with a 3 year deal worth 6.9 million, but MacLeean only gave Zherdev until last night to accept it, before it was pulled from the table. Zherdev remains unsigned, and if MacLean can't sign him, look for trade rumors to swirl. Zherdev could also end up playing in Russia for this season.

*Why is MacLean playing hardball? This guy is a true talent, and could complete a dynamic 2nd line for the Blue Jackets. MacLean needs to get his head out of his ass and sign this guy. He's not asking for 7 million, hes asking for around 3! Zherdev may not be worth 3 right n0w, but in a year or two? Is Bergy with 4.75 million this season? No. But he will be in a year or two. MacLean is not doing a good job.

He's not doing a good job by refusing to acknowledge that the market goes up because of some arbitration cases. Columbus is not in a situation where thye can throw the talent away. McClean could regret his attitude big time. At least, those things didn't happent in Beantown this year and that's the major point here...

yeah...could you guys do us all a favor and when they are available, use facts. its one thing to post rumors but when facts are available it would go a long way if you used them to support you claims.

Yes, he does get 3 million, but its still 4.75 on the cap hit. My point is, even though he's paid *3mil* it's the same as 4.75 since that is what the hit is. Also, I am not so sure I understand what you mean about using facts. I am using facts when I am making claims.

ok matt, think about things for a second....if you were going to spend and lets use numbers we are familiar with....30,000 dollars on a new car and pay for it over 5 years at 6 thousand a year that would be a monthy payment of 500 dollars. however your not sure you need a newish car this year but next year you will and you tell the dealer this. he works out a compromise an back loads the deal so you only have to pay 300 a month for the first year, this is a huge difference, hell you may walk away from the car in the next two years...now think about paying 1.75 million dollars for something you dont need this year? there is a huge differnce and you have to expand your mind and put yourself in the shoes of real people...this is not monoply money

cap hit and $ spent are two completely differnt things and can not be look at as interchangable....this is still a team owned by jeremy jabobs, isnt it?

Ok I agree they are different, but I am looking at it as, the team has 44 million to spend, and Bergy is taking 4.75 regardless if he is in reality only getting 3 million. Also, he will eventually get his 22.5 million. So in the end it is a wash. I understand your point, but I am not looking at it that way.

the cap is 44 million, yes. we do not know what chiarelli's budget is. i tend to believe they have spent their money for this year. they may spend some more at the beginning of the new year as they get a real feel for what they have and what they need and whats available.
