Money in then money out?
According to Peter Chiarelli's comments, the Boston Bruins could indeed pull a New Jerseyesque move to the cap. He said:
Based on that, the Bruins have the ability to go 10% over the cap, adding a potential 5.7 million in cap space, and then must do down by the end of September. The only issue is, if there are NO takers for Muzzy, then you cannot buy him out, but you could still demote him. It could be Chiarelli has some deals in place depending on what happens in the UFA period, and thus the Bruins could sign Hossa or Campbell, go over the cap and then deal guys like Schaefer, Alberts, Murray, Fernandez...etc.“I’m going to have to be in position to do it, if I’m going to get the player or players that I want,” Chiarelli said in a conference call yesterday. “I have to at least set the table. In a perfect world, if you want to do it that way, you’d like to move the money first and then get the player, but it doesn’t always happen that way. It may be that you get the player and you move the money at some point in the summer or the season.”
